Calling the Karnataka Assembly election results the “beginning of the end for BJP”, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said the people of the southern state voted against the “oppressive measures” of the saffron camp.
“I believe arrogance, discriminatory behaviour, ‘agency-politics’ and BJP’s unbound atrocities against the common man has led to today’s result. I salute the people of Karnataka for voting against the oppressive measures of BJP and practicing the idea of ‘No Vote To BJP’,” Banerjee told media persons gathered in front of her house, after seeing off actor Salman Khan who had come to pay her a visit on Saturday.
“Elections are slated for Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh in the near future. I am sure that BJP will lose in these states too. BJP sesher shuru (This is the beginning of the end of BJP’s era, which will finally culminate in 2024),” the CM said.
However, Banerjee did not mention the Congress.
“If one turns his head towards the south, we will notice the incompetence of BJP. Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu — BJP doesn’t even exist in these states. Similarly, in other states like Bihar, Bengal, Jharkhand, Delhi and Punjab, BJP remains in the backseat,” the CM was quoted in a statement issued by the Trinamool on Saturday.
“The people of Bengal have rejected BJP and now Karnataka has done the same. The verdict of the people shows that the government will have to deliver on its promises, otherwise they will have to face the consequences,” the statement further read.
She also hit out at BJP and claimed that Governors in state were working under its “spell”.
“We believe the judiciary can save us from the oppressive measures of this government. However, sometimes, both the lower courts and the high court interfere in the state’s affairs. At times, it seems that the Governor is also working under BJP’s spell. This makes us wonder what the role of the Governor is? And I am not referring specifically to the Governor of West Bengal,” the CM stated.
The Bengal chief minister targeted central probe agencies and claimed that the BJP-led Centre was using its “power to harm others”.
“If I say anything against them, they will send central agencies to my house. I do not fear them. I will face any battle that comes my way. Our issue is that the political party, which is in power at the Centre, cannot and should not exercise its power to harm others. I believe people will not accept this,” the chief minister was said to be quoted in the statement.
Earlier in the morning before the Karnataka electoral results were formally declared, the CM had congratulated the public of Karnataka for voting “in favour of change” in a Twitter post.
The CM tweeted, “My salutations to the people of Karnataka for their decisive mandate in favour of change!! Brute authoritarian and majoritarian politics is vanquished!! When people want plurality and democratic forces to win, no central design to dominate can repress their spontaneity : that is the moral of the story, lesson for tomorrow.”
TMC sources said that the party chief is expected to meet Opposition leaders in Delhi.
Earlier this year, Banerjee had announced that Trinamool Congress, would be part of a united Opposition, including the Congress to which would challenge the BJP in 2024.
