Andhra Pradesh now has 88,138 active Covid-19 cases. East Godavari district continued to report cases in four digits, adding 1,126 afresh, and inched closer to the 40,000 aggregate mark. Chittoor (959), Visakhapatnam (894) and Anantapuramu (851) also reported more cases in the last 24 hours. Chittoor also registered ten more Covid-19 deaths.
Guntur district now climbed to the top spot in the state chart with an overall toll of 284 after nine fatalities were added in a day. East and West Godavari districts reported eight new casualties each, Anantapuramu, Kadapa and Kurnool seven each, SPS Nellore, Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram six each, Prakasam and Srikakulam five each. Krishna added three deaths to its overall count.
Meanwhile, the case fatality rate in Telangana was 0.75 per cent, while it was 1.95 per cent at the national level. The total number of people who recovered from the infectious disease so far were 66,196, while 23,379 were under treatment.
The recovery rate was 73.34 per cent in the state, while it was 71.16 per cent in the country. The bulletin said 21,239 samples were tested on August 14 taking the cumulative to 7.32 lakh. The samples tested per million population was 19,728, it said.

East Godavari district continued to show a worsening trend, adding 1,399 fresh cases in the last 24 hours and pushing its aggregate to 43,999. It has the highest number of 15,767 active cases in the state after reporting 295 deaths as well. Anantapuramu also added 1,123 new cases, taking its gross to 31,630, but it has only 5,590 active cases. West Godavari (919), Visakhapatnam (835), Chittoor (830), Kurnool (794) and SPS Nellore (755) were the other districts to report a large number of cases in the last 24 hours. Chittoor and SPS Nellore also reported 15 more deaths each, Anantapuramu eight, Guntur seven, Prakasam and Srikakulam six each. With 313, Guntur now tops the chart in the COVID-19 toll in the state.
Maintaining the steep ascent, Andhra Pradesh's COVID-19 tally touched 3.16 lakh on Wednesday as 9,742 more cases were added in the last 24 hours. The Telangana government has decided to take over 50 per cent of beds available for COVID-19 treatment in private hospitals. Health Minister Eatala Rajender held a meeting with the representatives of private hospitals across the state on Thursday, and according to the minister’s office, hospitals have in-principal agreed to this. “But the modalities are being worked out,” said a senior official.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Tuesday took up for hearing a PIL, filed by a lawyer, on the alleged tapping of phones of some judges and posted it to August 20 after directing the state and the Central governments to file counters. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice J K Maheshwari and Justice D Ramesh, also directed the petitioners lawyer to submit proof of the allegation that a senior IPS official was entrusted with the task of phone tapping. The plea was filed by N Nimmi Grace. Additional Advocate General Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy, who presented the state governments case, requested the court to make a media house party to the litigation as it came out with the story of the phones of High Court judges allegedly being tapped.

After announcing a relief payment of Rs 2,000 each to the affected families, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy undertook an aerial survey in the afternoon of the flood havoc in the two districts. The Chief Minister, who reviewed the situation with Collectors of the two districts and senior officials, said as per information available, the flood flow in the river might fall further to about 17 lakh cusecs by Tuesday night, 14-12 lakh cusecs on Wednesday and 9-8 lakh cusecs by Thursday. "This is a good sign," Jagan remarked.
Telangana continued to witness an upward trend of coronavirus cases with 1,763 fresh additions, pushing the state's tally of positive cases to 95,700. With eight more fatalities the toll rose to 719, a state government bulletin said on Wednesday, providing data as of 8 PM on August 18. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), the COVID-19 hotspot in the state, witnessed 484 infections, cases being reported. The GHMC was followed by Medchal-Malkajgiri-169, Rangareddy-166 and Warangal Urban with 88 cases, it said.
Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Tuesday stressed the need to conduct adequate number of COVID-19 tests in the state, saying eradication of the virus would be difficult without sufficient testing. She reiterated the WHO's mantra of testing, tracking and treating to effectively fight against COVID-19. Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday became the third state after Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu in the country to cross the three lakh mark in the overall number of coronavirus cases. The state now has 3,06,261 cases after 9,652 were added in the last 24 hours ending at 10 AM but the number of active cases is only 85,130 with 2,18,311 patients having recovered so far, according to the latest government bulletin.
It took 160 days for the state to go from one to three lakh (cases) after the first person tested positive for the contagion on March 12 but the last one lakh came in quicker pace in just 11 days.

After touching a peak of 22.90 lakh cusecs on Tuesday morning, the deluge eased a little with the flow dwindling to 22.40 lakh cusecs by afternoon and remained steady. In East Godavari district, 95 relief camps have been opened where 14,477 people have been accommodated from flood-hit villages.
In all 147 villages under 23 revenue mandals in the district remained marooned due to the deluge, according to the District Collector Muralidhar Reddy. Another 77 villages remained cut off. Standing paddy crop in over 2,385 hectares was inundated in the district, while cotton in 225 hectares and horticulture crops in over 5,000 hectares were also affected. Full-scale enumeration of the damage would be undertaken after the flood recedes.

A 27-year-old expatriate from Telangana working in Saudi Arabia has been arrested on his return for allegedly spreading false information about the health of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on a social media platform recently, police said on Tuesday. Panyala Raju, a native of Jagityal district, was arrested at the Mumbai international airport on August 14 based on a look out circular (LOC) issued against him after the Cyber Crime wing of city police traced the post to him, they said.
In June this year, the Cyber Crime wing suo motu (on its own) had registered a case in connection with the social media post on 'false' information about the health of the chief minister and carrying a fabricated image. During investigation, it was found Raju, working in Saudi Arabia, had posted the message, a police release said.
At the request of the cyber wing, the LoC was issued against Raju and he was detained by immigration authorities at Mumbai airport on his arrival from Saudi Arabia. A city police team went to Mumbai, took the accused into its custody and brought him here, it added.
Andhra Pradesh, in all likelihood, will cross three lakh cases on Tuesday.

A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly spreading false information about the health of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao on a social media platform. The man, who while living in Saudi Arabia allegedly posted rumours about KCR’s health, was detained at Mumbai international airport upon his return.
The accused, identified as Panyala Raju, had allegedly in a June 7 post on Facebook claimed that KCR was infected by the novel coronavirus and that it was confirmed by Gandhi hospital doctors. He had also allegedly posted a fabricated photograph of the CM surrounded by doctors, claiming his death, according to a note from the Cyber Crime police.
Busting a multi-state cartel in an operation spanning over three days in two cities ––– Hyderabad and Mumbai, the officers of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence(DRI) have seized narcotic substances worth Rs 47 crore and raw material for another Rs 50 crore-worth drugs.
The seizure comprises 210 kg of Mephedrone, 10 kg of Ketamine, 31 kg of Ephedrine, and also the raw material to manufacture another 250kg of Mephedrone. The DRI officials also seized Rs 45 lakh net cash in Indian currency, US Dollars, and EUROs, said a statement from DRI’s Hyderabad zonal unit. While the mastermind behind the illegal manufacturing was arrested in Hyderabad, two others were arrested from Mumbai.

With an aim to promote financial inclusion and provide access of digital payments to rural areas of the state, the Andhra Pradesh government, in association with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Canara Bank, on Monday announced accessibility of UPI payments to 15,004 village secretariats and ward secretariats of the state.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy launched the initiative, which has “paved the way for customers to experience easy, safe and instant payment mode – UPI – for their day-to-day transactions”, according to a media release. With the introduction of QR Code, UPI is set to empower thousands of villagers with digital payments and introduce convenience in transactions, it stated.
An ACP-rank official in Hyderabad was suspended on Monday on the charge of "immoral behaviour", police said. Telangana Director General of Police M Mahendar Reddy issued the orders placing Assistant Commissioner of Police (Vanasthalipuram Division) S Jayaram, under suspension, officials said. Jayaram was attached to the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate. "We inquired (into the charge of immoral behaviour against the ACP) and then action (suspending him) was initiated," an officer told PTI
