Cricketer-turned-politician Md Azharuddin is likely to be elevated to Telangana cabinet minister’s role this week, sources in the Congress party said Wednesday. The decision has come ahead of key Jubilee Hills bypoll.
There are over 1 lakh Muslim voters in the constituency which has four lakh voters. “Senior Congress leader and former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin is likely to be inducted into the Telangana Cabinet on Thursday,” a party source told the Indian Express.
In August this year, Azharuddin was nominated to the Legislative Council. His induction into the Council — the Upper House of the state legislature — had come under Governor’s quota. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy nominated veteran Telangana leader M Kodandaram and Azharuddin in August.
“The Gandhi family has been insisting that Azharuddin should be given a cabinet berth. Several meetings were held and a decision to elevate him to the minister’s role was taken,” a senior Congress leader told the Indian Express. With his induction, the number of Ministers in the Revanth Reddy cabinet will go up to 16.
The total strength of the Council of Ministers, including the Chief Minister, in Telangana is 18.
