Teenager held for snatching foreign national’s phone in Goa

Police said the stolen mobile has been recovered from the accused, adding that further investigation is going on.

Goa police on Thursday arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly snatching a mobile phone from a foreign national in North Goa area.

According to the police, the incident took place on Tuesday. The complainant, Novikov Sarge, a native of Israel, lodged a police complaint stating that on April 18, as he was travelling from Pilerne to Betim, a person on a scooter intercepted him and his wife and snatched the phone from his wife’s hand and drove away. Police said the complainant stated that the phone’s cost was estimated to be over Rs 1.2 lakh.

Nidhin Valsan, SP, North Goa, said on the basis of the complaint, an FIR was registered against the accused under sections 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft of property carried by a person) and 379 (theft) of Indian Penal Code and a probe was initiated.

“A seven member team led by SDPO Porvorim Vidhwesh Karpe was formed to investigate the case.

Through technical surveillance and reliable information, the accused person, identified as Taufik Shaikh, a resident of Paithona, Bardez was arrested,” said Valsan.

Police said the stolen mobile has been recovered from the accused, adding that further investigation is going on.
