Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai Thursday called for promoting “positive secularism”, adding that brotherhood is the need of the hour.

“As far as Raj Bhavans are concerned…because of our interpretation to religious concepts and other things…normally the concept of secularism is always depicted as [one] to be kept at a distance from religion. I have a different opinion. Positive secularism…promote all religions and give them opportunity. Religions are leading people to goodness,” said Pillai.

Pillai was speaking at the launch of his book titled ‘The Contemporary Speeches’, a compilation of speeches of President Droupadi Murmu and Governor Pillai.

On the occasion, Goa Governor hosted a reception in honour of the supreme spiritual leader of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India Baselios Marthoma Mathews III and his team of 11 bishops.

Pillai said that in a democracy, the right to differ is the base of the democracy. “Different views may exist, but the fabric of unity among the people should be maintained,” he said.

Baselios Mathews III, who released the book, said that all religions must come forward and unite to eradicate poverty and addiction to drugs and alcohol.

“No single country or religion can fight these evils separately. More than 40 per cent of the world (population) is living below the poverty line. In India, more than 45 per cent of people are poor. Due to poverty, children are often working in fields and are not able to go to school to get education,” he said.
