Rs 1 crore, documents of 100 properties seized in ED raids linked to Suresh Patel

Amid a probe over a liquor mafia case, the Enforcement Directorate seized cash worth Rs 1.6 crore and documents of 100 properties in Daman (union territory) and Gujarat, officials said Wednesday. The raids were carried out on Monday at nine residential and commercial premises linked to former Daman district panchayat president and BJP leader Sukha alias Suresh Patel. He is presently in judicial custody in a double murder case. Most of the cash was in the denomination of Rs 2,000 currency notes, set to be discontinued.

Under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, the ED officials carried out raids at the properties in Daman and the neighbouring Valsad district.

Sukha Patel and his accomplices were involved in money laundering via a network of firms, as per the officials. The accused allegedly made money via criminal activities like bootlegging, and extortion. Officials also found bank accounts of Sukha, his family members, and his firms had cash transactions of over Rs 100 crore.

Patel is involved in 10 cases of liquor smuggling into Gujarat, seven cases of forgery and fraud, eight cases of murder and attempt to murder, five cases of possession of illegal firearms, and a case of corruption. The cases are filed with Daman and Gujarat police.
