We have nothing to do with app cabs, had reported them to govt, says radio taxi body

The association strove to disassociate itself from taxi services operated through mobile phone Apps.

The Association of Radio Taxis on Tuesday said it had written to the Delhi government’s Transport Department in April regarding the alleged ‘illegal’ activities, unlicensed operators in the capital”. On Tuesday, the association strove to disassociate itself from taxi services operated through mobile phone Apps and demanded that the government bring all radio taxi services under regulation.

The association — representing 13 operators, including Mega Cabs, Easy Cabs, Meru Cabs — said it wrote to the Transport Commissioner on April 7. In the letter it had said, “our member radio taxi operators in Delhi, who are licensed under the Radio Taxi Scheme 2006,  have approached us about illegal and unlawful activities being carried out”.

It had alleged that Ola cabs was operating “without adhering to rules and regulations of the State Transport Authority” since their fare was “not being controlled by the government” leading to them charging rates as per the “demand and requirement of passengers”.

The letter also alleged that Ola “measures the distance by using GPS over a mobile device i.e. not duly approved, verified or stamped by legal metrology department. “We submit that the use of this measuring device is not an approved model and is in gross violation of the relevant provisions of the Legal Metrology Act read with Standard Weights Act and Measurement Act. It is also violation of the “Radio Taxi Scheme, 2006,” the letter said.

Association president and chairman of Mega Cabs Kunal Lalani said, “We ask that all taxis be regulated. This is the only way we can ensure safety and security and transparency in the business.” He said they were not against app-based companies, but only that they be brought under uniform regulations.
