On New Year’s Eve, B.Tech student Sweety Kumari (20) and her friends were walking to her residence in Greater Noida’s Delta sector when they were struck by a vehicle.

While her friends Karsoni and Anganwa got off lightly, Sweety took the worst of the hit and has been in coma at Kailash hospital’s intensive care unit.

Speaking to The Indian Express, her friends retraced the events of the day.

Shivam Singh, who filed an FIR at the Beta 2 police station, said, “A friend was speaking to Karsoni on the phone. All of a sudden, the line got cut, and we could not reach her despite multiple calls. We later found that there had been an accident, and they had gone to Kailash hospital for treatment. According to the people who took them to the hospital, Sweety was hit so hard that she was hurled into the air. The vehicle that hit them was a white Santro which was going in a zig-zag manner.”

Karsoni said that while she escaped with a few bruises, Sweety and Anganwa were hospitalised.

Anganwa said, “My ribs are still hurting, but they are not fractured. My leg will also take some time to recover.” Sweety, however, sustained severe injuries to the head and legs and was bleeding from the ears as well.

Karsoni said, “We were walking in a line near the Delta sector bus stop when the accident took place. We were picked up by a couple in a Baleno who had seen the incident. However, they did not notice the registration number of the vehicle since they were in shock and went to rescue us. Sweety’s family in Bihar was informed. Since they come from a farming background, it was difficult for them to come at short notice. The money to pay for her treatment is being crowdfunded by students and people at the college.”

She added, “I have known her for two years… She is very smart and plays table tennis and badminton.”

Explaining the medical situation, Dr B K Sharma of Kailash hospital said, “When there is a head injury, there can be bleeding from the nose, ears, etc… She is in the ICU and slowly recovering. There is some movement and her eyes are opening and closing. Earlier, we had operated as there was a blood clot and pooling of blood… we are hoping that there will be some more improvement by the weekend.”

Police officers had earlier said that three teams had been deployed to investigate the incident and examine CCTV footage.
