St Stephen’s College Principal Valson Thampu formally introduced John Varghese, a professor at Hyderabad’s English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) who has been selected the new principal, to students and teachers in the morning assembly Thursday.

Varghese will take over from Thampu, who retires on February 29. Introducing him to the audience, Thampu said, “Professor Varghese, this is only a small beginning and I wish you all the best.”

Thampu had announced the selection of the new principal through a post on his Facebook page Wednesday, stating Varghese had been selected as the 13th principal and would take charge on March 1.

Varghese, who taught English at St Stephen’s College for a brief period in the 90s, was selected “unanimously” after the Supreme Council interviewed three candidates.

The others interviewed were St Stephen’s English Professor Karen Gabriel, and Susan Varghese from St John’s College, Agra.

Varghese is a professor in the Communication department of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies in EFLU, and an alumnus of Loyola College, Chennai. Samson Thomas, his colleague from EFLU, said over phone, “He was an efficient colleague, who was very good at his work and a thorough professional.”

Talking to The Indian Express, Thampu described Varghese as a man of peace. “He has a doctorate in English literature with a specialisation in the works of Thomas Hardy. He is a man of peace, unlike me. Just a while ago I was talking to the vice chancellor of EFLU, and was told he has great experience of administrative work. I believe he was the Public Relations officer there,” said Thampu, adding that Varghese belonged to the Syrian Orthodox Church.

Besides Varghese, five others had applied for the position. “… Of them, only three met requirements. None of them is alumnus of the college,” said Thampu. Varghese did not respond to calls and texts.
