Since 1986,it has been stringing Indian achievements together from people standing on one foot for an unimaginable period of time to those growing their hair five feet long and cramming 92 pencils into a mouth wide open. This year, the minds behind the Limca Book of Records have decided to take it a step forward,by including a special music section acknowledging the achievements of 10 Indian music maestros as People of the Year 2012.
The 23rd edition of the book was launched by legendary sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar at the Hotel Taj Palace on Monday.
Addressing the audience on the occasion,Pandit Shankar said,Music runs through the veins of every individual, and it is the thread that binds us all together. I am pleased to be chosen to felicitate these great musicians for their outstanding contribution to the world of music.
The event was blessed by the presence of some of the chosen People of the Year-2012,including Asha Bhosle,Shubha Mudgal,Teejan Bai,Yesudas,L Subramaniam and Ustad Zakir Hussain. When I recieved the phone call about the award,I didnt even know what the Limca Book was! said celebrated folk singer Teejan Bai,drawing peals of laughter from the audience. But after it was explained to me,I felt extremely privileged that someone like me,who doesnt even know English, should be considered worthy of this award.
Then she entertained the audience with some of her dialogues. Bhosle, who recently entered the Guiness Book of Word Records for the maximum number of recordings, said she was surprised that Delhiites did not speak in Hindi.
I recently entered the Guinness World Record in London, but this award is a bigger honour because it has come through Pandit Ravi Shankarji. I met him after a long time, and he reminds me of Tagore. God has forgotten to create people like him, she said.
Performances by Hariharan and Harshdeep Kaur,in tribute to musical legends such as Jagjit Singh and Dr Bhupen Hazarika, livened up the atmosphere. The Limca Book includes over 10,000 facts in its latest edition.
