More than two months after an avian influenza outbreak triggered a shutdown, the Delhi zoo will reopen to visitors on Saturday as bird flu tests have returned negative.

The zoo had been closed since 30 August after several birds, including painted storks and black-headed ibises, died owing to an avian influenza (H5N1) outbreak.

Four samples had then tested positive, with the last confirmed case recorded on September 1.

In a statement issued on Friday, the National Zoological Park (NZP) director, Dr Sanjeet Kumar, said, “All the prescribed biosafety and surveillance guidelines issued by the competent authorities have been followed after the report of positive case of avian influenza virus in water bird aviary on 28.08.2025 and thereafter the zoo was closed for visitors w.e.f. 30.08.2025.”

It added that “sampling were repeated after every 15 days for 4 times and all the samples from last positive case were found negative as per report of NIHSAD (National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases), Bhopal.”

In an earlier communication, the zoo noted that the report of the last sample sent on October 1 and received a week later was found negative. “After two consecutive negative reports, the last positive case for considering reopening permission proposal has been moved and the zoo reopening date will be informed to all concerned,” the zoo had then said.

On October 15, the zoo also said that there was “no active presence of the Avian Influenza virus detected at present,” while announcing two additional rounds of sampling before taking a final call on reopening.

According to Dr Kumar, guidelines issued by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying were followed for sampling and general protocol to control the avian flu.
