Sumit (27), Mohit (26) and his cousin Anurag (23) grew up together in West Delhi’s Nangloi. The trio would go out nearly every night. On Tuesday night, too, they headed out on Sumit’s Royal Enfield to Murthal in Haryana’s Sonipat for dinner.
“At 1.33 am, information regarding an accident on GT Road, Libaspur flyover, was received at Swaroop Nagar police station,” DCP (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami said.
At the spot, police found the three injured men — lying in different directions — in front of a concrete barricade near an under-construction road. The bike was found in a battered state some distance away. The men were rushed to the Burari government hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.
“They had gone to Murthal for dinner and, on their way back, collided with a jersey barrier on Libaspur flyover. It was further revealed that the trio were riding without helmets,” DCP Swami said.
A police officer said that prima facie, it appears that the three couldn’t spot the barricade until they got close to it. “We found skid marks near the barricade, which suggests that they hit the brakes suddenly. Efforts were made to trace eyewitnesses but none were found,” the officer said.
“The bodies have been preserved at the BJRM Hospital mortuary. A post-mortem will reveal if the deceased had consumed alcohol or not. From the facts and medical reports, offences under BNS sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) were made out. Hence, a case is being registered,” DCP Swami said.
At the accident site, a lone green Crocs belonging to one of the victims lay between the barricades. The Royal Enfield — mangled, burnt and dusty, the engine nearly visible through the destroyed hood — stood at Swaroop Nagar police station.
The bike was a gift, said Sumit’s father Madan Lal Sharma. He gave it to his son six years ago. He said Sumit was preparing for the CA exams while working part-time as a security guard.
“It was his first bike, and then he couldn’t bring himself to like any other. He could handle it very well…,” said Madan.
Sumit is survived by his parents, younger brother and two sisters.
While Sumit and Anurag lived in Shiv Ram Park, Mohit lived nearby in Kumar Singh Nagar. “The three of them had a ritual of going out every night after dinner. Yesterday, they went to eat out. Teeno ek saath bade hue, aur ek saath chale gaye (They grew up together, and left us together),” said Madan.
Anurag’s father, Gopal, said he was working at the back-end of an e-commerce company and was also taking computer classes to get a promotion.
