A day after Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Muhammad Iqbal, Aam Aadmi Party candidates for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi mayor and deputy mayor posts, filed their nominations, they visited the Okhla landfill site along with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Wednesday.
After his visit, Sisodia said he would personally monitor the work to clear the landfill site. “Working towards removing the mountains of garbage from Delhi, I visited Okhla landfill sites today along with AAP’s mayor and deputy mayor candidates. It is our resolution to raze down these landfill sites and make the city clean and beautiful. I will visit all three landfill sites every week and will personally monitor the work,” Sisodia said in a tweet.
Sisodia, along with Oberoi and Iqbal, conducted an assessment of the ongoing work at the landfill site. “Clearing garbage mountains of Delhi in Ghazipur, Okhla and Bhalswa was not the priority of the previous government (in the corporation), hence height of these landfill sites kept on growing in the past 15 years. But now, under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, we are ready with an action plan to eliminate these garbage mounds…,” he said.
“As soon as the mayor and deputy mayor take oath, the speed of the clearing process will be doubled,” he said.
Sisodia further said the number of waste disposal machines will be increased at the site to expedite work.
Oberoi and Iqbal said people have “shown trust in the work of the AAP-led Delhi government” and voted it to power in MCD. “Now, it is our priority to fulfil all guarantees promised during the campaign, especially elimination of the garbage mounds,” they said.
Meanwhile, in a statement, BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva said, “The Deputy CM has played a new gimmick to mislead the people of Delhi by visiting the Okhla landfill site…”
He added, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the waste-to-energy power plant’ in Tughlakabad and since then all garbage of South Delhi goes to the plant, which is used to generate electricity. Since October 20, new garbage has stopped entering Okhla and 6,000 metric tonnes of inert (garbage ash) is being lifted daily from the site. The corporation has already declared that Okhla landfill site will be cleared before the G20 summit… work is going on to clean other landfill sites. He (Sisodia) is trying to take credit for the work being done by the BJP.”
