A 27-year-old MPhil degree holder was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing-I (EOW-I) of the Gurgaon Police on Wednesday for allegedly cheating 96 people of nearly Rs 10 crore in a property fraud case.
According to the police, he carried out the fraud by selling victims non-existent or disputed plots under the banner of his firm “Khatu Shyam Property”.
The accused, identified as Nitish Kumar—hailing from Mosadanpur village in the Begusarai district of Bihar—currently resides in Dev Nagar area of Rithoj in the city.
“Besides running the property firm, he also operates Shiv Ganga Public School in Rithoj village. Kumar’s modus operandi was to pose as the owner of plots in Ryan Enclave, Dev Nagar Part 2, Bhondsi etc, prepare fake agreements to sell, take substantial amounts from buyers, hand over temporary possession and later reclaim the land. In many cases, the same plot was sold to four-five different buyers”, a police officer said.
The case came to light after a complainant approached the Bhondsi police station on September 18 this year, alleging that he was duped of around Rs 30 lakh. A FIR was registered and the investigation was then transferred to the EOW-I.
Acting on technical surveillance and intelligence, a police team arrested Kumar from Rithoj on Wednesday.
“During initial questioning, the accused admitted to having cheated over 96 people using forged documents. He told investigators that the money obtained through fraud was used to purchase agricultural land from farmers in Bihar,” the officer said.
The accused was produced before a local court on Wednesday, police said. Further investigation is underway.
