Delhi Flood, Weather Highlights: Yamuna level in Delhi continues to rise, evacuation underway

The Delhi government has taken several measures in the past six months to increase the carrying capacity of the Yamuna river, Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Minister Parvesh Verma said on Wednesday.

The minister, who was on an inspection visit at the ITO barrage, assured people that there is no need to worry or panic over the rising Yamuna river levels, as the situation is under control.

"In the past six months, steps have been taken by different departments to increase the carrying capacity of the river. Currently, the situation is under control, and even if the level rises by one or two metres more, water will not enter Delhi roads like it did in 2023," Verma told reporters.

The Yamuna river level was recorded at 206.83 metres at the Old Railway Bridge (ORB) on Wednesday at 8 am — above the evacuation mark of 206 metres.

The Delhi Education Department has asked all schools in the Capital to impart education on processed foods to students, as per a recent circular.

Making students aware about the evils of consuming unhealthy and unbalanced diet, on the lines of an initiative by the CBSE, and educating students about food processing including its scientific principles, innovations, health implications, and, quality standards to help them make informed dietary choices and understand the entire value chain from farm to fork — these are some of the measures that need to be followed, according to the circular sent to the school heads.

The school heads have been asked to submit an action taken report of all such activities conducted with the school health branch by September 20.

With civic bodies in Delhi-NCR yet to designate stray dog feeding spots in line with the Supreme Court’s latest orders, several caregivers have claimed the order is being misinterpreted as a blanket ban on feeding. Many of them said they have faced abuse and harassment for feeding dogs in the meantime — even if it is at designated spots.

Ghaziabad resident Sheeja Sharma (46) said she’s been feeding 28 community dogs — some inside her housing society and others outside — for the past four years. She said she has faced her fair share of harassment from fellow residents over the years, but things worsened since the SC modified its earlier order on stray dogs on August 22.

“Earlier, residents would throw water and mud from their windows when I used to feed the dogs. Now, they target me on the residents’ WhatsApp group…,” she said.

They say see, speak, and hear no evil, but nowadays, definitely record and report it. That’s what a Japanese tourist in Gurgaon learnt.

On August 25, Yamato/Kaito was riding pillion with his friend. Like many in the city, she was wearing a helmet, but he wasn’t, something he noticed was true for most of their fellow riders.

They caught the eyes of the traffic policemen stationed near a U-turn, who demanded a fine of Rs 1000, and in cash. They refused to accept payment by card or digitally, and declined to issue a receipt, saying the PoS machine was not working.

The Japanese tourist handed over two crisp Rs 500 notes, and the officers were captured on video counting the bills with satisfaction, one even flashing a smile.

Before letting them go, the traffic policemen noted the woman’s phone number, and told her to call them if she were stopped again.
