Yogendra Singh (35), a sewadar at Delhi’s Kalkaji Mandir who was allegedly beaten to death beaten to death by a group of men after a quarrel over prasad on Friday night, had arguments with two of the five accused three-four times in the last few weeks, said police.

“The issue was always entry into the temple and the prasad. Two of the accused, Mohan and Kuldeep, were regular visitors, and had arguments with the deceased whenever they tried to muscle their way through the crowd. They also rejected the prasad as the deceased didn’t like their behaviour,” a police officer said.

Apart from Mohan and Kuldeep, Nitin Pandey (26), a resident of Govindpuri and father, Anil Kumar, and Atul Pandey (30) were arrested in the case after Singh died.

Police said a PCR call was received around 9.30 pm about a quarrel inside the temple premises on Friday. When a police team reached the spot, it was found that a group of men had come to the temple for darshan and later demanded chunni prasad (a combination of a sacred headscarf and a religious offering of food) from Singh.

An argument broke out, and the men allegedly assaulted Singh with sticks and rained blows, said police. He was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he succumbed to injuries.

An officer earlier said, “On Friday, the men ran into Yogendra again at the temple. Yogendra told them that the temple had run out of prasad when they asked for some. Enraged, the men decided to wait until the temple closed and followed him to the temple’s dharamshala. As Yogendra rested, they entered the room and dragged him outside to beat him.”
