Remarks taken out of context, says JNU prof Amita Singh

In the interview, when asked how many people in JNU were anti-national, she allegedly said, “You think any teacher would be stupid to encourage anti-national slogans? These are hardly 5-6 people, and that too Dalits and Muslims.”

A day after the JNUTA condemned statements allegedly made by JNU Professor Amita Singh during an interview, she said her comments had been taken “out of context” by the reporter. Singh, who had allegedly said that the handful of “anti-national” teachers in campus were “Dalits and Muslims”, Monday said that she only meant that students from these communities were used as “political fodder by Left teachers”.

“Firstly, the interview was an informal one, and I wasn’t told it would be put on a website. Secondly, my statements were taken out of context… the JNUTA is not pro-Dalit, pro-Muslim or pro-women,” she said.

The university has sent a notice to Singh, asking her to clarify her statements.
