Manu Sharma, convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of model Jessica Lall in 1999, once again moved the Delhi High Court seeking premature release from jail. This comes 10 months after the court ordered the premature release of former Youth Congress leader Sushil Kumar Sharma, who had served over 23 years in prison for the murder of his wife Naina Sahni in 1995.
Manu Sharma’s plea came up for hearing before a bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal, which sought the response of the Delhi government’s department concerned within four weeks. The court fixed the matter for further hearing on December 16.
On December 21 last year, the HC had ordered Sushil Sharma’s premature release after quashing the recommendations of the Sentence Review Board (SRB), which had rejected his plea to be set free.
Manu Sharma, in his plea filed through advocate Amit Sahni, sought setting aside of the July 19 SRB recommendation rejecting his plea, as well as the September 19 Delhi government order upholding the board’s view.
The convict contended that “despite fulfilling all required parameters considered by the Board for release of life convicts, and having completed more than the stipulated 20 years (with remission) as per SRB order dated 16-07-2004,” his request was turned down in “utmost unfair, arbitrary and impartial manner”. As per the plea, he has served 17 years in jail without remission and almost 23 years with remission and is eligible for grant of premature release.
