Days after a 21-year-old man from Dwarka was killed after a car driving on the wrong side rammed into his motorcycle on Golf Course Road in Gurgaon, his family sought compensation.

Around 5.45 am Sunday, traveller service associate, Akshat Garg had headed out for a ride with his friends when he was mowed down by a Mahindra XUV EXD.

Based on his colleague and friend Pradhuman Kumar’s complaint, an FIR was registered Sunday and the SUV driver Kuldeep Kumar Thakur (25) was arrested.

Thakur, who had a BJP sticker on his car’s bonnet, was granted bail by a court the same day.

Akshat’s brother Mayank (24), said that he started working as a teen to support his family. “Both of us had started working as delivery agents at the age of 18. He did everything he could to assist the family and after years of struggle, finally started living the life he dreamt of. Last month, he bought an AC and a washing machine for the house and was proud of it. He was soon to get a promotion.”

“We would have paid off our debt in six months… Things were going well for the first time in our lives and then this happens…,” he added. While his family lived in Dwarka, Akshat had been working in Gurgaon. His mother was a primary school teacher, while his father left a private job years ago. “We have a six-year-old sister, who has not been able to grasp the reality,” Mayank said.

Mayank sought compensation for Akshat’s death. “The police gave bail to the man the same day. I know it is the law, but if the law mandates bail on the day the crime took place, something is wrong,” he added. He maintained that he doesn’t want to drag politics into the matter.
