While Delhi has already recorded excess rainfall for the month of June, with the monsoon having hit the city on Sunday, more rainfall is expected on Wednesday and over the next six days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast said that Delhi is likely to see cloudy skies and light rainfall or thundershowers on Wednesday. A ‘yellow’ alert, the lowest level of the colour-coded warning that the IMD issues, is in place for the national capital on Wednesday, which is an indication to be aware. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature is likely to be around 36 degrees Celsius, a little more than the 34.8 degrees recorded on Tuesday.

Over the past 24 hours, Delhi has recorded only 0.1 mm of rainfall.

Light rainfall or thundershowers are also likely on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while very light rain is expected on Sunday, according to the IMD forecast.

So far this month, the Safdarjung weather station, which the IMD considers as a marker for the city, has recorded 79.5 mm of rainfall, which is 24% above the ‘normal’ of 64.1 mm till June 28. The weather station at Palam has recorded an even higher amount of 114.8 mm of rainfall this month.

Till June 27, the city as a whole has recorded 102.6 mm of rainfall, which is 98% above the normal of 51.7 mm for the month till then. This marks a large excess, according to the IMD. Of the nine districts in Delhi that the IMD considers, eight have recorded excess rainfall so far this month. Northeast Delhi is the only district that has recorded a large deficit of 61%, having received only 24.6 mm of rainfall till Tuesday.

Northwest India has also recorded excess rainfall so far this month, even as the southwest monsoon continues to advance further into more parts of Rajasthan, and the remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab. The Northwest India region has recorded 91.9 mm of rainfall till June 27, which is 46% above the normal, IMD data shows. In the region, Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have recorded deficits in rainfall so far in June, while other parts (Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Western Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and Rajasthan) have recorded excess rainfall under the impact of Cyclone Biparjoy and its remnants and western disturbances.
