A month after a Delhi University professor was allegedly slapped by Deepika Jha, the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Joint Secretary and an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader, the varsity has barred her from entering any college campuses in her capacity as a student leader for two months, senior officials told The Indian Express on Sunday.
The decision follows an altercation on October 16 at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, where Jha allegedly slapped Professor Sujit Kumar, a faculty member and convener of the college’s disciplinary committee, during a meeting inside the Principal’s office.
A senior university official said the panel formed to look into the matter had initially recommended a three‑month suspension. “The administration decided that after two months of suspension, there would be a review of her behaviour,” the official said. “In this period, she cannot enter campuses in her capacity as a DUSU office‑bearer. She can only attend her classes. The decision will be communicated to the student on Monday.”
Jha did not respond to calls or messages seeking comment.
Following the alleged assault, Kumar resigned from the committee, while other members demanded a university‑level inquiry into the incident.
According to the Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF), around 50 students — including DUSU President Aryan Maan — entered the college alongside Jha, where they “mistreated teachers and demanded the resignation of the disciplinary committee convener.” In a statement, the group alleged that the Joint Secretary “slapped Professor Sujit Kumar in the Principal’s office, CCTV footage of which is available.”
Condemning the incident, which it described as “mobocracy and hooliganism,” the DTF warned that if left unchecked, the episode could push the university “into violence.”
After the incident, Jha issued a statement apologising “to the entire teaching community,” while accusing Kumar of misbehaving with her — a claim he has denied.
Jha said she had been called to the college by students who complained of “politically motivated abuse and assault” by the professor. “In the Principal’s room, in the presence of police, Professor Sujit threatened and abused me. I complained to the police, but the officers present took no action,” she had alleged.
A purported video shows that the alleged incident occurred in the presence of police officers.
The Delhi Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered in the matter. The college had also constituted its own inquiry committee to look into the incident.
