The Sunday Profile: Gurnam Singh Chanduni, the face behind Haryana’s farmer protests

The farmers’ agitation in Punjab was a few months old when, acting on a call to take the protest to Delhi, Gurnam Singh Chaduni on November 24, 2020, exhorted protesters to make it to the Capital “at any cost”, “breaking police barricades” if needed. The next day, thousands hit the streets in Haryana, surging through multiple blockades, manned by thousands of policemen.

It was then that the rest of the country took note of the 61-year-old leader of BKU (Chaduni) and member of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is spearheading the agitation against three farm laws passed by the Centre. On August 28, it was on Chaduni’s call that protesters tried to make their way to a BJP event in Karnal, attended among others by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. The police crackdown left several farmers injured, the Khattar government on the backfoot, the transfer of Sub-Divisional Magistrate Ayush Sinha, and the reinforcement of the fact that the Chaduni-led agitation in Haryana has kept the state administration on its toes now for nearly a year.

This ground, this city is not able to accomodate everyone, such is the scale of gathering. Farmers had debt worth crores in UP... This is the same Muzaffarnagar where rivers of blood were drawn between Hindus and Muslims. They played politics with burning houses. Someone (Yogi) who makes communities fight, cannot be true Son of the nation."

"The price of sugarcane has not been increased. Instead of giving fair prices for crops, the UP government is fooling the farmers. They said we will buy each food crop grain. Modi government said we will get crop insurance. The govt benifitted of Rs 2,500 crore in the name of insurance. It is farmers money," he added.

Head constable murder case: Delhi HC grants bail to 5 accused

The Delhi High Court said Friday that the right to protest and express dissent is a fundamental right in a democracy and the sole act of protesting “should not be employed as a weapon” to justify the incarceration of those who are exercising the right.

It said that every member of the unlawful assembly cannot be booked under murder charges.

“The applicability of Section 149 IPC, specifically read with Section 302, cannot be done on the basis of vague evidence and general allegations. When there is a crowd involved, at the juncture of grant or denial of bail the court must hesitate before arriving at the conclusion that every member of the unlawful assembly inhabits a common intention to accomplish the unlawful common object,” said Justice Subramonium Prasad. Have filed FIR against Afghan nationals protesting outside UNHRC office for violation of Covid protocols: Delhi Police to HC
