On Thursday morning, Mohammad Hassan, 30, fervently dug through the charred remains of his shanty, which was destroyed in a fire Wednesday. Amid smoke and stench of burnt rubber and plastic, he picked up a sewing machine and some charred pages of his son’s notebook. Standing beside him, his wife Nuruda, broke down.
“We have lost everything. All our savings, belongings, documents are gone. We had been saving for our daughter’s marriage,” said Hassan, a labourer.
Delhi: Woman consumes sanitiser on Instagram Live, rescued by cops
In one of the quickest rescue operations by the Delhi Police, a 25-year-old woman who was allegedly threatening to commit suicide on an Instagram Live video was traced and saved in North Delhi. Police on Thursday claimed that it took them less than eight minutes to complete the operation.
The woman had allegedly consumed sanitiser and was threatening to end her life while she was recording herself on Instagram Live. She lives with her husband.
The National Commission for Minorities on Thursday directed the Punjab government to advise hotels, restaurants and other eateries in the state to mandatorily disclose whether the meat they are serving is ‘halal’ or ‘jhatka’ so that people can make an informed choice.
In a letter to Punjab’s chief secretary Anirudh Tewari, NCM Chairman Iqbal Singh Lalpura said it has come to the notice of the commission that hotels/restaurants in Punjab are serving halal meat only which is prohibited in Sikh religion.

With stronger winds, Delhi’s air quality saw slight improvement on Saturday with an AQI of 291, while the national capital also recorded the first ‘cold day’ of this season.
On Friday, the AQI was 329, in the ‘very poor’ category.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted a ‘cold day’ for Delhi on Saturday and Sunday. A ‘cold day’ is recorded when the minimum temperature at a station in the plains is less than or equal to 10 degrees Celsius, and the maximum temperature at the station is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees less than normal.
The Vasant Vihar Sub Divisional Magistrate has directed Andaz Hotel in Aerocity to cancel the concert of Punjabi singer A P Dhillon citing violation of Covid guidelines by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). The event was to be held Saturday night.

He referenced a DDMA notice dated December 15 with “regards to prohibited/restricted activities from December 16th to January 1st which prohibits all social/political/sports/entertainment cultural/religious/festival related rings and congregations throughout NCT of Delhi”.
Hours after arresting a 49-year-old man for allegedly planting a tiffin bomb inside Rohini district court to kill his neighbour, who is an advocate, the Delhi Police on Saturday said the accused is a DRDO scientist who was locked in a court battle with the advocate.
A senior police officer from the Special Cell told The Indian Express that the accused has been identified as Bharat Bhushan Kataria. “We have sufficient evidence against him, including electronic evidence which shows his presence on the court premises. Now we are trying to find whether anyone else was involved,” said the officer, adding that they have “ruled out any terror angle.”
A plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking direction to the Centre and Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to formulate a policy to issue Rs 50 coins to provide equal opportunity and ease of doing business to the visually impaired citizens of the country. A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh listed the application for hearing on February 25, 2022.
The application was filed in a pending petition by advocate Rohit Dandriyal seeking directions to the authorities to withdraw the new currency notes of Rs 50 as the visually-impaired people were finding it difficult to use them due to their size and the tactile marks.
Services on the Green Park-Qutub Minar section of the Delhi Metro's Yellow Line will be suspended for a few hours on December 19 morning due to a scheduled track maintenance work, DMRC officials said on Friday. The Yellow Line connects Samaypur Badli in Delhi to HUDA City Centre in Gurugram. "To undertake the scheduled track maintenance work at Qutab Minar Metro station of Yellow Line, train services on the morning of 19th December 2021 (Sunday) on this line will be briefly regulated," the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said in a statement.
Train services will remain suspended from Green Park to Qutab Minar from the start of revenue services till 7 am. Hence, three metro stations, namely Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar and Saket, will be closed till resumption of train services in this section, it said. However, connectivity between Green Park and Qutab Minar stations will be provided through free feeder bus services during this period at a frequency of around 25-30 minutes. Passengers are advised to plan their journey accordingly during this period, it added.
Four persons, including an autorickshaw driver, died after a container truck overturned and fell on an autorickshaw near Indira Gandhi stadium in Central district, early Saturday morning. The police have identified two of the deceased as Surender Kumar Yadav, who was driving the three-wheeler, and his nephew Jai Kishor. The others are yet to be identified.
An FIR has been registered at I P Estate police station and initial probe has revealed that the truck was loaded with rice and was heading from Sonepat to Tughlakabad. The truck’s driver and helper are absconding. “We are conducting raids to nab them,” said DCP (Central district) Shweta Chauhan.

The planning body of the Delhi Development Authority on Friday approved the transportation plan for the Central Vista redevelopment project, an official said. The foundation stone of the Central Vista project was laid in December 2020. The revamp envisages a new triangular Parliament building, with seating capacity for 900 to 1,200 MPs, that is targeted to be constructed by August 2022 when the country will be celebrating its 75th Independence Day. The common Central Secretariat is likely to be built by 2024. The Central Vista redevelopment seeks to upgrade the boulevard running from Vijay Chowk to India Gate with more amenities.
All schools in Delhi for class 6 onwards reopened on Saturday after the air quality panel considered the air quality index and the winter vacation schedule. However, they will continue to remain closed for students of primary grades.
The Union Environment Ministry has released Rs 11 crore to Delhi under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) to cater to critical gaps in air pollution management, officials said Friday. This is the first time Delhi has got funds under NCAP, a national-level strategy for a 20 per cent to 30 per cent reduction in PM2.5 and PM10 concentration by 2024, with 2017 as the base year for comparison.
"Delhi has been allocated Rs 18.74 crore under NCAP. This is the first time it received funds under the programme since it started in 2019. The first installment of Rs 11 crore was released a few days ago," an official said.
"The rest of the amount will be released after Delhi submits utilization certificates for up to 60 percent of the first installment," he said.
The NCAP fund will be utilised to meet critical gaps -- wherever there is any inadequacy of funds from other sources. The rest of the funding is to be mobilised through convergence of schemes. Funds for bigger projects such as management of construction and demolition waste are allocated under the Swachh Bharat Urban programme and other schemes of the central government. NCAP covers 132 non-attainment cities which do not meet the prescribed national ambient air quality standards. (PTI)
The men who allegedly lynched a 25-year-old man in Trilokpuri on suspicion of theft were returning from a wedding and were drunk, police have said.
The man, Mohd Afsar Shabbir, left home early Tuesday morning, according to his mother, 70-year-old Raffo Begam. A few hours later, she was told that Shabbir had been found lying in a pool of blood close to their home.
He was beaten to death by a group of six or seven men. Police said he was brutally assaulted with stones and bricks, and succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Read More
A man died while his wife and three children are undergoing treatment for burn injuries after a fire broke out in their rented room in Sector 40 on Thursday night. According to the police, the incident took place around 11.30 pm when Suresh Saha, a migrant from Bihar, and his family members were in their room.
Kuldeep Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Sector 40, said the deceased was declared dead at the hospital. “Suresh suffered at least 70 per cent burn injuries and fell unconscious due to the smoke. His wife and three sons, aged 11, 17 and 18, suffered burn injuries and were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Three of them are in a critical condition,” Singh said. Read More
Physical classes in schools (Class 6 onward) and colleges can resume with immediate effect in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) informed on Friday.
The Delhi government and state governments in the National Capital Region have been advised to take immediate decision to resume offline classes.

A 23-year-old woman working in the administration department of Fortis Hospital was injured after two men on a scooter dragged her on the road for nearly 200 metres as she resisted a robbery bid.
Police said the woman was standing by the road in Shalimar Bagh when the accused tried snatching her phone. She resisted and caught one of the accused by his jacket, but they accelerated the bike, causing her to fall. Read More

With 10 more cases of the Omicron variant confirmed in the city, Delhi’s tally has gone up to 20.
“Ten new cases of Omicron variant have been reported in Delhi, taking the total number of cases of the variant here to 20. A total of 10 people of these 20, have been discharged,” said Health Minister Satyendar Jain on Friday.
This is the largest number of Omicron cases detected in the city in one day so far. This comes a day after Delhi recorded the highest positivity since June 28 at 0.15 per cent. As of Thursday, there were 475 active cases in the city.
Suspected Omicron cases arriving from ‘at risk’ countries are being referred from IGI airport to Lok Nayak Hospital, where they are being quarantined. Genome sequencing is being conducted.
The air quality in Delhi is likely to be in the lower end of the ‘very poor’ category on Friday, according to a morning forecast issued by the Air Quality Early Warning System.
The AQI is likely to be in the ‘poor’ category over the weekend, the forecast indicates. The slight improvement in air quality can be attributed to high wind speeds from December 17 onwards, according to the SAFAR forecasting system.
On Thursday, the AQI in Delhi was 368 – in the ‘very poor’ category. AQI between 301 and 400 is considered ‘very poor.’ Similarly on Wednesday, the AQI was 363. Read more
The Public Works Department (PWD) will strengthen about ten key stretches in the West Delhi area to make roads safer for commuters and pedestrians by preventing traffic jams and accidents caused due to broken roads and potholes. The department has also received financial nod for the development work, said officials.
A PWD official said, “We have got the financial approval for strengthening, resurfacing and micro-surfacing these roads to improve safety. This procedure is carried out when the roads are in bad condition and needs improvement and maintenance. Under this, the PWD will repair the roads and fill cracks, broken sections and potholes to avoid accidents and make the roads better for traffic movement, commuter and pedestrian safety.” Read more
IIT-Delhi has seen a “record” number of offers in the first phase of this year’s placement season with the institute recording a 45 per cent increase in the number of offers received in this period.

Delhi on Thursday reported 85 Covid-19 cases — highest since July 31, according to the government’s health bulletin. The positivity rate at 0.15% is also the highest since June 28. According to the bulletin, out of the 56,027 people who were tested for Covid, 85 were positive. The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to invite proposals from the general public and experts for a permanent solution to air pollution woes in the Delhi-NCR region.
A bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana directed that the suggestions received should be considered by an expert group constituted by the Commission. The bench, also comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant, was hearing a plea seeking measures to alleviate Delhi’s pollution. Read more
Four new cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in Delhi over the last two days, taking Delhi’s total count up to ten.
According to Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, there are currently 40 people who are suspected cases of the variant admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital, of whom 38 are Covid-19 positive. He added that eight of these were referred to the hospital from IGI airport on Thursday morning. Read more

A Ghaziabad police team was allegedly attacked by the locals during a raid to arrest alleged arms dealers. According to the police, the incident occurred late Tuesday night when a Special Operations Group (SOG) team reached Vikram Enclave in Ghaziabad following a tip-off about arms dealers being present in the area.
As the officers arrested three accused persons, locals objected to it and a crowd gathered, said the police. The locals became more agitated and pelted stones on the police. The security personnel began pushing the crowd back while some locals also resorted to stray-firing, said the police. Read more
On the day that marked two years of violence against students by police personnel at Jamia Millia Islamia, Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar Wednesday said the university’s A++ NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) grade was an “aggressive answer” that the university “had not lost that day”.
Addressing reporters at a press conference at the university, Akhtar said, “It is a day to remember for us but we are alive despite that, we have moved forward despite it. All the students who were injured are moving on with their lives. So we will not reduce our happiness… If we had become demoralised that day, we would have lost… This was an aggressive answer that we did not lose that day, and we will not lose in the future too.” Read more

A 25-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by a group of six or seven men on suspicion of theft in East Delhi’s Trilokpuri area on Tuesday. The police said the deceased was brutally assaulted with stones and bricks and he succumbed to injuries at a hospital.
The victim, identified as Shabbir Khan, worked at a shop near his home. The police have arrested a man in connection with the murder case. Other accused are on the run. Read more
The Delhi government has asked its marriage officers to do away with issuance of notices to parents and residences of couples who seek registration of marriage under the Special Marriage Act and warned them of “stern action” in case of non-compliance.
This government circular comes after a contempt case was filed before the Delhi High Court in August seeking action against a sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), whose office had sent a notice to an interfaith couple’s parents last year. Following the official intimation, the woman had been detained by her family and was released only after her partner filed a habeas corpus before the court. Read more
South Delhi Mayor Mukesh Suryan said that the civic body has come up with an amnesty scheme for a waiver of interest and penalty to the taxpayers on payment of property tax for the financial Year 2021-22.
This would be for all types of properties falling under the jurisdiction of the SDMC.
Suryan said that under the scheme, waiver of 100 percent interest and 100 percent penalty would be given if payment of outstanding property tax dues is made by 15th January 2022, waiver of 75 percent interest and 100 percent penalty if payment of outstanding Property Tax dues is made by 28th February 2022. Mystery around the stolen money in Gurgaon’s high-profile multi-crore theft is deepening even as investigators hint that the money may be linked to a mining businessman from Haryana’s Bhiwani.
An official from Haryana said, “We have been told that the theft had taken place in two flats in Gurgaon’s Sector 82 in August. One flat from where the maximum amount was stolen belongs to a mining businessman, who is engaged in the mining activity in Dadam of Bhiwani district. We have been told that the money stolen belonged to people close to him. This businessman is close to the company, which has lodged a complaint in the case, for the past nearly 20 years.” Read more
The national capital on Wednesday recorded a minimum temperature of 7.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below normal, and a maximum of 22.5 degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said.
The weather office predicted partly cloudy skies and a drizzle towards Thursday evening in Delhi and nearby areas under the influence of a western disturbance. From Friday, the mercury is likely to drop with the commencement of cold and dry northwesterly winds from the snow-clad Himalayas. The air quality in the national capital remained very poor on Wednesday but is predicted to improve from Friday due to a likely increase in the wind speed. The city's 24-hour average air quality index read 363 at 4 pm, down from 367 on Tuesday. Neighbouring Faridabad (334), Ghaziabad (290), Greater Noida (300), Gurgaon (341) and Noida (309) recorded their air quality in the "poor to very poor" range.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences' air quality forecast agency SAFAR said shallow foggy condition is likely to keep AQI "poor" for next two days. A significant improvement is likely from Friday due to favourable wind speed. (PTI)
The family of a man accused in a robbery case has alleged that a group of policemen barged into their home after breaking the door and unleashed a pitbull on their pet dog, who died of injuries. The family also alleged that the personnel “insulted the modesty” of the man’s mother and wife. Police denied the allegations.
The alleged incident took place last week on December 7. The family alleged that personnel from Begampur police station came to their house with a pitbull and unleashed the dog on their pet because it barked at them. Read more
After over one year, the Delhi Police on Wednesday allowed traffic movement as well as opened two carriageways at Singhu border after it dismantled all the barricades that were erected to prevent the protesting farmers from moving towards the national capital.
“It has been decided that Singhu border be opened from Delhi side also. It has been opened for all vehicles,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer north) Brijendra Kumar Yadav said.
Farmers started leaving the protest site on the Delhi-Haryana border on Saturday after the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) suspended the agitation following the repeal of the Centre's three farm laws and the government conceding to its other demands. (PTI)
The national capital recorded 57 fresh coronavirus cases at a positivity rate of 0.10 per cent while no fresh deaths were reported due to the infection, according to data shared by the health department here on Wednesday.
Delhi has recorded two deaths due to COVID-19 so far this month. It had logged seven deaths due to the viral disease in November, four in October and five in September.
With the new cases, the city's infection tally climbed to 14,41,850. Of this, over 14.16 lakh patients have recovered from the disease, the health department bulletin stated. The death toll stands at 25,100, it said. (PTI)
The process of admissions for nursery classes in private schools across the national capital began on Wednesday. The application window will close on January 7. The Directorate of Education (DoE) had notified the admission schedule last month.
For the last academic session, admissions to entry-level classes began in February this year after a delay due to COVID-19. However, this year, the schedule is in line with previous years.
"The first list of selected children will be out on February 4, followed by a second list on February 21 and a subsequent list for admissions, if any, on March 15. The entire admission process will conclude on March 31," a DoE official said. Schools were asked to notify their number of seats and admission criteria by Tuesday.
The DoE has directed that the number of seats at the entry-level shall not be less than the highest number of seats in entry-level classes during the last three academic years -- 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22. (PTI)
A 36-year-old man was killed after he was accidentally knocked down by a truck in north Delhi's Burari area on Tuesday night, police said. The truck driver has been arrested, they said. Mahender Kumar, a resident of Tikri Khurd in Narela, was en route to his house on his motorcycle after visiting a relative when he came under the truck at around 10.45 pm. He was driving a cab for a living, they said on Wednesday.
According to a senior police officer, the truck driver Ram Prakash (47), a native of Uttar Pradesh, took the Burari flyover here only to realise that he was on the wrong road and hence moved his vehicle backwards. However, the truck's rear indicators were not working. Kumar, who arrived on the flyover, could not gauge that the truck was being moved in the opposite direction and ran under it, leading to his death. (PTI)
A Delhi court on Wednesday granted interim relief to BJP leader Sambit Patra and stayed an order directing registration of an FIR against him for allegedly posting a doctored video of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal supporting the farm laws.
Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Sharma stayed the November 23 order of Metropolitan Magistrate Rishabh Kapoor who had directed Delhi Police to register an FIR and conduct a thorough investigation against the BJP Spokesperson, while allowing the application of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Atishi.
Patra had then moved the court challenging the magistrate court's order.
“The operation of the impugned order dated November 23 is stayed,” the sessions judge said and listed the matter for further hearing on January 10, 2022.
The magistrate earlier, while allowing Atishi's plea for registration of FIR, had noted that the alleged doctored video may have resulted in rioting like situation across the nation. (PTI)
A 26-year-old woman, who left her husband's house in Haryana's Sonipat along with her two daughters as she suspected him of having an illicit affair, was traced in Punjab's Amritsar and reunited with her family, police said on Wednesday.
According to Delhi Police, the woman and her children had gone missing from Kashmiri Gate area of the national capital on October 29. The woman hails from Bela in Uttar Pradesh and had been staying with her parents after leaving her husband in the first week of October, suspecting him of having an extramarital affair with his sister-in-law, police said, adding the couple got married in 2015 and often quarelled over the issue. However, the woman's father decided to take her and the children back to Sonipat after talking to his son-in-law, police said.
They took a bus from Bela and reached Anand Vihar Terminal here on the night of October 28. They then boarded an auto-rickshaw and reached Kashmiri Gate at around 5 am, police said. When her father went to the washroom, she escaped along with her daughters. Later, her father informed police, they said.
Police said the phone number of the woman was put on surveillance and it was revealed that she was heading towards Punjab. Her last location was traced in Ludhiana and she was in contact with some people there. The woman was inspired by TV series ‘Crime Patrol' and knowing that police would be looking for her, after every call, she would remove the SIM card from her mobile phone, they said. The Delhi High Court Wednesday sought response from Delhi Police on pleas by real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal seeking suspension of their seven-year jail terms awarded for tampering with evidence in the 1997 case of Uphaar cinema fire which had claimed 59 lives.
Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice on the petitions and also sought response from the complainant, Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy.
On December 3, Additional Sessions Judge Anil Antil had rejected Ansals' plea to suspend their conviction and jail term in the evidence tampering case by a magisterial court and refused to release the convicts on bail.
Senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the petitioners, assailed the sessions court order and argued that the seven-year-term exceeded the maximum punishment that could be granted in the case.

A recent analysis of trends in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions across 23 states in the country has found three states — Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan — severely breaching the safety limits prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in November. Following the escape of some children from a shelter home in the national capital earlier this year, the Delhi High Court has directed Delhi’s Department of Women and Child Development to inform the court about the steps being taken to ensure that the children at such centres are not kidnapped or do not escape.
The court had last month observed that the affairs at the shelter home run by the Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust and other such places are appalling as children either run away or are being kidnapped at regular intervals. Read more

The Delhi government plans on treating around 95 MGD (million gallons per day) of water in the Badshahpur drain that comes from Haryana and falls into Najafgarh drain, which further meets the Yamuna river, according to Water Minister Satyendar Jain.
A senior official at the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said that water in the Badshahpur drain will be treated using ‘in-situ technology.’ Floating wetlands and aerators are likely to be deployed in the flowing water to treat it, he said. Read more
Days after a Delhi court came down heavily on the Delhi Police and called the incident of alleged gangster Rohit Gehlot being shot in the leg staged, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana has directed a deputy commissioner of police (DCP) rank officer to conduct an inquiry.
A senior police officer said the matter was referred to the police chief Asthana from the legal division and he issued directions for an inquiry. “After Asthana’s direction, DCP (outer district) has been asked to conduct an inquiry and submit his report within two weeks,” the officer said. A former village head was allegedly shot dead at Dadri in Greater Noida on Tuesday. According to the police, the victim, Nanhu Singh (65), was working on his farm when unknown assailants opened fire at him. He was declared dead when rushed to the nearest hospital.
The victim was the former pradhan of the Nainsukh village in the Dadri region. As he was working on his farm at Nagla in the evening, bike-borne assailants stopped him in his tracks and opened fire. The accused shot multiple rounds, said the police. Since it was a deserted area, it was only after some time that locals reached the spot. Read more
At Rajghat, not far from the Mahatma Gandhi samadhi, a 67-year-old lush green Ashoka tree stands out on the manicured lawns.
The tree was planted on December 18, 1954, by Marshal Josip Tito, the erstwhile President of Yugoslavia, when he visited India during Jawaharlal Nehru’s term as Prime Minister. It now has dense foliage of long, glossy leaves. Read more
A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable died in an accident while on duty in New Delhi’s Sardar Patel Marg at around 3.20 am Tuesday.
The police said the constable was with Delhi police personnel performing picket and traffic duty when a speeding truck rammed into a tent at Sardar Patel Marg. The deceased, identified as Omprakash Singh, was sitting inside the tent. Read more
