A 26-year-old man was arrested from the Narela area in Outer North Delhi on Saturday for allegedly running a sextortion racket while posing as a cyber police officer, police said.
Police said that the racket came to light after Ravi Parkesh Saini, a resident of Narela, Delhi was allegedly threatened by the accused, Naseem (26), along with his accomplice to pay Rs 39,000 to prevent an obscene video from being uploaded online.
“Saini received a Facebook Messenger video call from an unknown woman, which was immediately disconnected. Shortly after, he got a call from an unknown mobile number. The caller claimed to be a Cyber Police officer and alleged that an obscene video of him would be uploaded to YouTube,” said DCP (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami.
Panicked, Saini transferred Rs 39,000 to the accused and later filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP).
Through technical analysis, police traced Naseem and arrested him from the Nuh area in Haryana, officers said.
Police said Naseem’s accomplice, who posed as a YouTube official to deceive victims, is currently on the run.
