Death sentence: Man used company’s car to kidnap teen, it led to arrest of all three

When Rahul failed to produce the papers of the vehicle, he was handed over to local police, after which he confessed to the crime.

It was on the night of February 9, 2012 that the police control room received a call about a woman who had been kidnapped in a red Tata Indica near Hanuman Chowk, Qutub Vihar in Chhawla, Southwest Delhi.

Sub-Inspector Prakash Chand, reached the spot with a constable. At the spot, Chand was told by a woman identified as Saraswati, that around 8.45 pm she was walking back to her residence with the victim and her two friends, when “a red Tata Indica came from behind and suddenly applied brakes”. At the time of the incident, the victim was returning to her Chhawla residence from Gurgaon.

Saraswati had told the investigating officer that “a boy opened the door and pulled the victim inside the car while 3-4 other boys were sitting inside”. An eyewitness, Vikas, said in his statement that on February 9, 2012, he had got down from a bus at Sumesh Vihar when he spotted the accused persons trying to drag one of the girls. Vikas had tried to intervene but the accused persons got into a scuffle and fled with the victim.

For around three days, police followed the routine protocol of uploading the victim’s details on Zipnet. Then, the case was transferred to the special staff of the Southwest district.

On February 13, just hours after the case was transferred, one of the accused, Rahul, was stopped by an assistant sub-inspector from the Emergency Response Vehicle in Dwarka Sector 9. The ASI claimed that he had stopped Rahul, who was in the red Tata Indica, as he had heard the wireless message about the kidnapping of a woman in a similar car, for three days.

When Rahul failed to produce registration papers of the vehicle, he was handed over to police, after which he confessed to the crime.

The vehicle in which the victim was kidnapped had been found to be registered in the name of a travel agency — Om Tours and Travels — where Rahul was employed as a driver.
