He works in the twilight zone, where art and design blend into each other. After a series of limited edition sculptures which celebrated motifs of India’s highways, designer Alex Davis is back with a new collection. This time around, his stainless steel sculptures are a contemporary take on the decorative art of the country’s stately forts and palaces.
Majestic in their simplicity, the seven installations on display at The Park are a part of a larger series, which includes furniture and accessories also. Aptly titled “Once Upon a Time”, the show is a fitting tribute to the majestic grandeur of a bygone era. The installation titled Chattri reminds you of the domes found across the country, a telltale sign of the Mughals once making India their home.
The artist, an alumnus of National Institute of Drama, Ahmedabad and Domus Academy, Milan, travelled around Rajasthan and Agra for this collection. “Delhi too has its share of the kind of architecture that has inspired this collection. The motifs that I have used — friezes and scrolls, lattices, medallions and cartouches — are all commonly found in Rajput and Mughal architecture,” says Davis.
A touch of gold, that’s all the colour one sees apart from the glint of the steel in his life-sized installations. “Colour means a lot to me. I’ve added just a bit of gold to link the sculptures to the age it is inspired from. I like using steel for sculptures because it is modern, and it has a sense of neutrality to it. It’s a light and an easy metal to work with,” says Kerala-born Davis, who has made Delhi his home for the last 22 years. After “Dented Painted”, the highway-inspired series, and sculptures from “My Lazy Garden” and “Hyper Blooms” (both inspired by nature), his lustrous and smooth-flowing lines of steel have now added a new glint to the sandstone and marble edifices that inspired him.
“Once Upon a Time” is on display at The Park, 15, Parliament Street, till May 15. Contact 23743000
