In the Budget speech, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Ashwini Kumar on Friday announced that over 54,000 stray dogs have been sterilised from April till September this year. The civic body also announced plans to build three dog shelters in the Capital, after the budget of the year 2026-27 was presented.

“One dog shelter will be made in Dwarka Sector 29 where there is 2.5 acres of land to keep aggressive dogs. Other shelters to hold extra dogs and to increase Animal Birth Control Centres (ABC) capacity will be made in Bijwasan and Bella Road, with 14 and 40 kennels respectively,” an official said.

In his speech, Kumar stated that 6,347 cattle were sent to gaushalas, while 731 monkeys were caught and relocated to the Asola Bhati Mines Wildlife Sanctuary.

The development comes after the Supreme Court had pulled up the civic body, ordering it to capture all stray dogs and confine them to shelters. The top court had later modified its order and allowed the release of sterilised and vaccinated dogs to the area from where they were picked up from.

Meanwhile, the MCD on Tuesday approved the proposal to release Rs 13.5 cr to clear unpaid dues to NGOs operating sterilisation centres for stray dogs across Delhi. The civic body on Tuesday also introduced penalties on NGOs running ABC centres if rabies cases or failed sterilisations are reported within their allotted areas.
