The Delhi High Court Tuesday sought Delhi Police’s response in a bail plea moved by Pinky Irani, an accused in the Rs 200-crore extortion case against alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekar.

A single-judge bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma issued notice to the Delhi Police in Irani’s bail plea directing them to file a status report listing it for hearing on May 23. Irani has moved the HC against the trial court’s order of March 4 which had dismissed her bail plea.

Irani’s counsel argued that the trial court had in its March 4 order “wrongly dismissed” her bail plea and that Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) is not applicable against her. Appearing for the Delhi police, advocate Nandita Rao submitted that there are a lot of documents and recoveries and sought some time to file a status report. Irani’s counsel further said that his client has been in custody since her arrest on November 30, 2022, and sought an early date for the listing of the matter.

The court issued notice on another bail plea moved by jail staffer Sunil Kumar listing the matter on May 23 as well.

Irani had been accused of introducing several actors to Chandrashekhar in jail, and acting as his personal shopper, The Indian Express had reported. The Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police filed a supplementary chargesheet this January against Irani, a TV anchor.

The EOW case follows an FIR filed by Aditi Singh, the wife of former Fortis promoter Shivinder Singh, who claimed she was duped by Chandrashekhar, who extorted Rs 200 crore from her under the pretext of securing bail for her husband. Shivinder was arrested in 2020 for alleged misappropriation of funds at Religare Finvest Ltd (RFL).
