A 14-year-old orphan girl who was forced into prostitution after she came from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi on a train in search of a job was rescued by the police last week. According to the Delhi Police, they received a tip-off on July 12 around 8.30 pm that a minor girl was being compelled to work at a brothel near Ajmeri Gate and she should be rescued.

A police team led by C L Meena, Station House Officer (SHO), Kamla Market, along with an NGO, immediately reached the spot and found the girl in the custody of a woman, Anjali alias Meena, 42. A police officer said the girl was rescued and taken to a shelter. The girl was also counselled by a counsellor from the NGO.

A senior officer said the girl ended up in Southeast Delhi’s Zakir Nagar where she met a man. He got in touch with Anjali who received abandoned and homeless teenagers in the city and lured them into prostitution, and handed over the girl to her.

“It has emerged that the victim is an orphan hailing from UP who had come to Delhi in search of work. Through force of circumstances, she got lured into the sex trade. During investigation, the statement of the victim was recorded and the accused, Anjali, was arrested and sent to judicial custody,” Harsh Vardhan DCP (Central), said.
