Legislators force govt to freeze police transfers

Several MLAs and ministers say their preferences were ignored

Giving in to pressure from legislators, the Karnataka government Friday froze transfers of police officers announced announced Wednesday night.

The decision came after several MLAs,including of the ruling Congress, and some ministers expressed unhappiness with chief minister Siddaramaiah, home minister K J George and state Congress president G Parameshwar for ignoring their preferences in the transfer of inspectors and deputy superintendents of police.

Siddaramaiah discussed the matter with George in the morning and then ordered Karnataka director general of police L R Pachau and Bangalore police commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar, who is on the Police Establishment Board,to stop the transfer till further orders.

Auradkar said he was directed not to proceed with the transfer process so as to allow some corrections. He then informed all concerned officers to stay in their current posts for now.

The government had,in line with the Supreme Court guidelines, empowered the PEB to prepare a list of officers who were due for transfer. The board listed more than 600 – 498 inspectors and 135 DSPs.

Most of the inspectors deputed for law and order in the city were posted to non-executive and traffic police stations in the outskirts of Bangalore. Police stations in the state capital were to get new inspectors and the Central Crime Branch was set for a major reshuffle, with four new assistant commissioners of police and several inspectors.

This, however, didn’t go down well with several MLAs and ministers. And they complained to Parameshwar that the government had ignored their recommendations. Many had given recommendation letters to their favourite officers.
