The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) will be renamed the Kempegowda International Airport on Saturday alongside the opening of the Terminal 1A by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh.
While the new name is intended to honour the founding father of Bangalore it also expected to go down well with the Vokkaliga community. Kempegowda,whose support the Congress is hoping to win,also belongs to this community.
The UPA government had approved the name change four months ago. There had been multiple requests from various local communities for the airport to be named after their local heroes including that of Tipu Sultan.
After the name change aiport authorities will label all its communication,infrastructure and day-to-day transaction under the KIAB banner.
