Two women sustained injuries in mild electric shock during the temple car festival in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvannamalai Thursday, the district administration has said in a statement.

The official confirmation comes amid false reports that several people sustained electric shock in the incident.

District Collector B Murugesh, said the incident occurred due to leakage from a UPS device in a flower shop, about 250 metres from the temple car position, around 5.30 pm.

“On the seventh day of the Deepa Thiruvizha (festival of lights) at Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar temple power supply was disconnected in the area as a precautionary measure when the car festival ‘panchamoorthigal magaratham therottam’ was underway. However, the women sustained mild shock when they came in contact with the live wire at the shop. Soon, the medical staff deployed in the area gave them first aid and the women were admitted to Tiruvannamalai government medical college and hospital,” he said.

The collector asserted that the district administration has taken all safety measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.

Meanwhile, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami issued a statement, claiming that he has learnt from reports that over 100 people were affected due to the power leakage and eight people have been admitted at the Tiruvannamalai hospital.

He slammed the DMK government, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department (HR and CE), and the police department for not taking requisite preventive measures during such processions where the power supply would be disconnected. The government should at least wake up now to avert such incidents in future, he said.
