Tamil Nadu weather today: Tamil Nadu is unlikely to see any respite from the incessant spell of rain due to the onset of the northeast monsoon. On Thursday, the state is likely to receive heavy rainfall in several regions, including capital Chennai. According to the latest weather forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), “Heavy rain is likely [on Thursday, October 23] to occur at isolated places over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet districts.”
The IMD said light to moderate rain is likely over a few places with thunderstorm and lightning over Puducherry and Karaikal area as well, apart from Tamil Nadu. Chengalpattu, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, The Nilgiris, Thiruvallur, Thoothukkudi, Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive light to moderate rain.
Rainfall of 2.5mm-15.5mm in 24 hours is classified as light rain, whereas rainfall of 15.6-64.4mm is categorised as ‘moderate’. If the 24-hour average rainfall is between 64.5 and 115.5 mm, it is classified as ‘heavy rain’. The rainfall is classified as ‘very heavy’ if it is over 115.6mm and below 204.4 mm. Anything above 204.5 is categorised as ‘extreme’.
A yellow alert for heavy rainfall is in place in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet districts.”
Due to the incessant rain, Dharmapuri collector Satish has declared a holiday for the schools in the district on October 23.
The IMD has warned of traffic disruption due to the inclement Tamil Nadu weather.
Meanwhile, the IMD said the well-marked low pressure area that gave rise to the cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu coast could weaken on Thursday. This would lead to some respite for citizens as the Tamil Nadu weather could get a breather from the incessant rain.
The IMD has also forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka on Thursday October 23. Heavy rainfall over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Mahe, Konkan and Goa is also likely. Similar conditions will prevail for the day over Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The IMD weather forecast for Chennai on Thursday stated the maximum temperature in the city could rise up to 31°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 24°C. The heavy rainfall will continue. Chennai recorded a rainfall of 97.9 mm in the 24 hours till 8:30 am, Wednesday.
