Violence broke out at a coastal hamlet in Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday after a person was hacked to death allegedly by a rival political camp when he was returning home. Twenty people have been booked for setting on fire boats, cars and ransacking houses in Thazhanguda, said Cuddalore Deputy Superintendent of Police, Shanthi.

Police said seven people were held responsible for the murder and five of them have been arrested till now. Close to 50 police officers from Villupuram have been deployed near the hospital to avoid any untoward incident.

Mounting yet another attack on the Centre’s new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, DMK President MK Stalin on Sunday alleged if it was implemented, education in a decade will be confined among a few. He also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertion on NEP ensuring all-round coverage vis-a-vis providing education, and wanted the ruling AIADMK to oppose it.

“The Prime Minister has said this (NEP) ensures job creators than job seekers. It is not. I say the government has shied away from its duty of creating jobs for people,” he said at a virtual interaction with some educationists and others to discuss the reforms.

Following heavy rains in the Nilgiris district, over 200 people have been evacuated and traffic has been restored on the Udhagamandalam-Gudalur national highway in the hills, the Tamil Nadu government said on Tuesday. As many as 112 officials have been deployed in connection with the relief work in the Nilgiris which experienced 62.64 mm (average) rainfall on Monday, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister R B Udhayakumar said.
Referring to the heavy downpour in areas including Avalanchi, Dewala and Naduvattam and the fast filling Pilloor reservoir, he said a total of 227 people belonging to areas that witnessed flooding in Gudalur taluk have been safely sheltered in schools in the region.

The Met department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts between August 4 and 8.
Meanwhile, a Coimbatore report said a flood alert was sounded to people living on the banks of Bhavani river in Mettupalayam in the district, to move to safe places, as surplus water was released from Pilloor dam. The people living on the banks were advised to move to safer places and cautioned not to venture into the river either for taking bath or washing clothes. Meanwhile, Noyyal river in the city was also in spate, following good rains in the catchment areas of Kovai Kutralam, Chadiyaru, Narasipuram rivers, official sources said.

A traffic police constable attached to Vepery Police Station in Chennai was injured on Sunday evening after a severed piece of manja thread slit his throat on Padi flyover. The constable and his wife, who was riding pillion, sustained injuries after they fell off the bike.
The duo was rescued by other motorists on the flyover and admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment. The constable received stitches for his neck and his condition is said to be stable.
The Villivakkam police have registered a case.
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit has decided to not host the annual ‘At Home Reception’ at Raj Bhavan during Independence Day celebrations this year, owing to the pandemic.
The Governor had tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday and had been advised home isolation. A statement released by Raj Bhavan stated that the Governor’s health is stable.

The Tamil Nadu Police is investigating if a man who died a month ago in Coimbatore was wanted Sri Lankan druglord Maddumage Chandana Lasantha Perera alias Angoda Lokka.
Lokka, 35, had gone missing from Sri Lanka in 2017 and is believed to have been living in the state for the past year.
The man whose death police are probing in Coimbatore went by the name Pradeep Singh. The police inquiry was sparked off by a query by a journalist over a media report in Lanka, saying Lokka had been poisoned by a rival Bengaluru-based gang and his body brought to Coimbatore.

Tamil Nadu recorded 5,609 fresh cases on Monday, taking the overall tally to 2,63,222. This is the fifth consecutive day that less than 6,000 cases have been recorded.
Of the total cases, Chennai recorded 1,021. With 20 deaths in the past 24 hours, the city’s toll reached 2176. Other districts like Ranipet (382), Virudhunagar (348), Thiruvallur (332), Chengalpet (331) and Kancheepuram (322) districts reported the maximum cases on Monday.

For the first time since the pandemic outbreak, the state’s death toll went past the 100-mark on a single day, taking the cumulative toll to 4,241 on Monday. The state also recorded 5,609 fresh cases, taking the overall tally to 2,63,222. This is the fifth consecutive day that less than 6,000 cases have been recorded.
Including 5,800 recoveries on Monday, the total number of discharged cases rose to 2,02,283. There are still 56,698 active cases in Tamil Nadu.
Among the deceased, eight had no co-morbidities. On Monday, 32 returnees from other countries and states tested positive for Covid-19.
As many as 4,87,533 persons have entered Tamil Nadu through various modes of travel till date and 5,608 of them have tested positive.

Salem on Sunday reported 134 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s tally to 3804.
The district has 1166 active cases while 2605 people have recovered and 33 people have succumbed to the disease.
The district’s average number of cases from July 1 to July 23 is 78. From July 24 to July 29, the city saw a spike in cases. 139 was the district's average based on the cases recorded from July 24 to July 29. But cases have gone down in the last few days. The district saw an average of 94 from July 30 to August 2.
Chennai on Sunday reported 1065 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 1,01,951.
The district has 12,193 active cases while 87,604 people have recovered from the disease and 2154 people have succumbed to it.
Chennai saw an average of 1932 cases from July 1 to July 6 whereas from July 7 to July 25, Chennai saw a decline with an average of 1220. Cases declined even further from July 26 to July 30 with an average of 1138. In the past few days, July 31 to August 2, the city has seen further decrease in cases,with an average of 1050.
Coimbatore district reported 167 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, taking the total number of positive cases to 5,230.
The district has 1,690 active cases while 3,469 people have recovered and 71 people have succumbed to the virus.
The district saw an average of 60 cases from July 4 to July 11. From July 12 to July 22, the district’s average was 124 cases. Number of cases went high between July 23 and July 30, with an average of 262. But the city has seen a decrease in cases in the past few days, from July 31 to August 2, with an average of 191.
Madurai on Sunday reported 178 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 11,352.
The district has 2,354 active cases while 8745 people have recovered and 253 people have succumbed to the disease.
The district saw an average of 291 cases from July 1 to July 11. From July 12 to 17, the district’s average increased to 350, after which the district saw a slight drop in cases from July 18 to July 22 resulting in an average of 170.
From July 23 to July 28, the city saw a spike in cases with an average of 284. But in the last few days, from July 29 to August 2, the city’s average has gone down to 192.
Nainar Nagenthiran, vice president of Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu has tested positive for Covid-19. Nainar Nagenthiran tweeted saying that, keeping in mind the welfare of the people around him and also based on the advice given by doctors, he has decided to self quarantine. He also tweeted that he is carrying along with him the devotional song book, Kanda Sashti Kavasam.
Recoveries have crossed 10,000 in three zones in Chennai, with Royapuram (Zone 5) leading the tally with 10,278 recoveries.

Tiruchirappali on Sunday reported 136 new Covid-19 cases, taking the city’s Covid-19 tally to 4416.
The district has 1574 active cases while 2782 people have recovered from the virus. 60 people have succumbed to COVID-19.
The district saw an average of 55 cases from July 1 to July 9. From July 10 to July 20, the district’s average increased to 107. The city’s average skyrocketed to 176 from July 21 to July 28. But from July 29 to August 2, the city’s average has gone down to 132.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu over the next 48 hours. According to the RMC, parts of Thiruvallur, Vellore, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Trichy, Karur, Madurai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Virudhunagar and Tenkasi and parts of Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours.
Meanwhile, parts of Nilgiris are slated to receive rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the next 24 hours. Chennai will continue to witness cloudy skies over the next 24 hours, with isolated showers expected in parts of the city.
Chennai has 12,190 active cases, out of which Kodambakkam (Zone 10) with 1394 cases has the most number of active cases in the city.

It is still very early days yet, but even Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu have begun to show signs of a stabilisation in their active cases (see charts below). In Tamil Nadu, almost for the entire last week, the number of new detections has been only slightly more than those recovering every day, which has resulted in the plateauing of the growth of active cases during this period.
But these trends are only a few days old, and can change anytime. In the case of Tamil Nadu at least, such a dip in active cases has been observed in an earlier period as well. No other major state, apart from Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra is showing any signs of reduction in active cases right now.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Monday said he was “saddened” by the three-language formula in the new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and would not implement it in the state.
“We are saddened by the three-language policy introduced by the central government in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Our state has been following a two-language policy for decades, and there will be no changes in it. I request Prime Minister to pay heed to the unanimous demand of the people of Tamil Nadu to reconsider the three language policy and allow states to make a decision as per their own policy,” a statement from his office read.
Edapaddi’s statement came a day after Union Minister for Education Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said the Centre would not force any language on states, in a bit to allay fears. The Education Minister’s statement had come amid protests in Tamil Nadu on the grounds that the policy allegedly imposed Hindi and Sanskrit. Nishank had said the policy leaves it to states to choose the languages.

MP for Sivagangai district, Karti P Chidambaram has tested positive for COVID-19. "My symptoms are mild and as per medical advice I am under home quarantine. I would urge all those who have recently been in contact with me to follow medical protocol." (sic), he tweeted.
With this, 20 legislators in Tamil Nadu have tested positive till date.

Thirty-six year old Madhivanan, brother of a former Panchayat union leader, was killed when he was returning home. His body has been sent for post-mortem to the Villupuram Government Hospital.
The Deputy SP said a long-standing rivalry between the two local panchayat leaders led to the recent murder and subsequent violence.

Tamil Nadu recorded 5,875 fresh cases on Sunday, taking the state tally to 2,57,613. Cases have been on the decline in the state for the fourth consecutive day. Among these, Chennai reported 1,065 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 1,01,951.

Tamil Nadu recorded 98 deaths on Sunday, putting the state toll at 4,132. Ninety of them had succumbed due to comorbidities. The state discharged 5,517 patients following treatment, putting the total number of recoveries at 1,96,483.
As of Sunday, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 56,998. Till date, 1,56,140 males, 1,01,446 females and 27 transgenders have tested positive for the virus in the state.
According to a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, 27,79,062 samples from the state have been sent for testing till date, with 60,344 samples sent on Sunday.
