Addressing the media, Gonsalves dedicated her win at the 95th Academy Awards to “Tamil Nadu, women, conservation and indigenous communities”. She added, “It’s truly an honour to bring back this Oscar to Tamil Nadu, to its home state. I am from Nilgiris and I am very proud to be here.”
Gonsalves, who arrived with the coveted statuette, was given a grand reception at the Chennai airport earlier in the day. She later reached the secretariat to meet Stalin. Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu, Additional Chief Secretary (Environment, Climate Change and Forest) Supriya Sahu were also present.
A week ago, Stalin met Bomman and Belli who were featured in the 40-minute documentary that follows the story of a young orphaned elephant, Raghu, and his caretakers in Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai Tiger Reserve.
The chief minister honoured the duo by presenting them a shield and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh each. Further, to mark the historic occasion, he also made an announcement that all the 91 elephant caretakers working at the two elephant camps at Theppakadu in Mudumalai and at Kozhikamuthi elephant camp in Anaimalai would be provided a grant of Rs 1 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
