Persons of all castes to be appointed as temple priests in TN soon: Minister

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated the process to appoint persons of all castes (contrary to the hereditary Brahmin priests) as archakas (priests) for the temples in the State and steps will be taken to appoint those trained by the government during the previous DMK government, State Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department Minister P K Sekar Babu said on Wednesday.

Maintaining that the move will fulfill the dream of DMK stalwart and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who wanted people of all castes to become temple priests, the Minister said the candidates who are well versed in Agama Shastras and in reciting slokas, as well, and duly certified by the government will be appointed as archakas.

“Presently, the process of appointing people of all castes as archakas is on nearly a decade after our Kalaignar (late Karunanidhi) had ordered in 2010 that anyone can become temple priests. This is now materialising after overcoming legal hurdles,” the Minister said responding to a question from reporters during his inspection at the Sri Ekambareswarar temple and Sri Kachaleswarar temple in Chennai, along with HR & CE Commissioner J Kumaragurubaran and other officials.

Chennai Super King's gesture to former Tamil Nadu cricketers

Three-time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings on Tuesday honoured four former Tamil Nadu cricketers and noted curator K Parthasarathy for their contributions to the game. CSK contributed an amount of Rs seven lakh to the five who were associated with Tamil Nadu cricket in the past.

Former BCCI and TNCA President N Srinivasan handed over cheques to the beneficiaries at a function here on Tuesday in the presence of TNCA secretary R S Ramaswamy.

The four players- K R Rajagopal, Najam Hussain, S V S Mani and R Prabhakar- had played for the state at various periods of time, a press release said here.

Parthasarathy was a popular curator of M A Chidambaram stadium here from 1973 till his retirement in 2013. He has curated matches in all formats including three World Cup matches, 4 Women's World Cup matches, India A' series games and was also associated with the tied Test in 1986.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association had in recognition and appreciation of the immense contribution towards the game had instituted a one-time payment of Rs five lakh to cricketers, groundsmen, match officials and others who helped build our sport.

Welcoming this initiative, CSK whose home base is Chennai, came forward to show its love and respect to these veterans and will be contributing Rs seven lakh each to some of the veteran cricketers- the number synonymous with the much-loved captain M S Dhoni (who wears the No.7 jersey). Rajagopal, batsman-wicket keeper who played for Tamil Nadu, was a prolific scorer and was distinctly unlucky to miss out on a spot in Indian team's tour to Australia in 1967 while Najam Hussain was an all-rounder who played for erstwhile Mysore, Madras.

Mani played for Tamil Nadu and South Zone alongside legends such as VV Kumar, S Venkataraghavan, AG Milkha Singh, M L Jaisimha, E A S Prasanna and AG Kripal Singh and was in the reserves of the Indian Test team and Prabhakar was a medium-pacer who played Ranji Trophy for the state. (PTI)

Madras HC quashes order suspending co-op society office-bearers

The Madras High Court on Tuesday set aside the orders of the Registrar of Co-operative Societies suspending two elected office-bearers from service for alleged irregularities.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh quashed the orders dated June 1 this year of the Registrar of Co-Operative Societies (Housing) in Vepery, while allowing two writ petitions from D Krishnamoorthy, president and S R Ravi, vice-president of the Perambur Co-Operative Society, today.

Among other things, the petitioner's senior counsel alleged malafide and political vendetta.  The suspension order is nothing but  'his master's voice' of the present political disposition, he added.

Though the judge pointed out that in this case things had moved swiftly from May 20 to June 6 and by the time an inquiry officer was appointed, the impugned proceedings suspending the petitioners came to be issued, however, observed that given the nature of the allegations and denials it would be treading a slippery slope if this court was to return a finding merely based on the assertions made by the petitioners and the same being denied by the  other parties.

The proper course, therefore, would be to examine the impugned order and to see if the jurisdictional requirements for triggering Section 76-A of the TN Co-Operative Societies Act, 1983, have been met, the judge said.

A mere prima facie case will not enable the Registrar to invoke Section 76-A. The jurisdictional requirement of  this section, thus, has not been met in this case. The Registrar had invoked this section without jurisdiction, the judge said and set aside the suspension orders.

The judge, however, made it clear that the inquiry under Sec 81 of the Act can go on. A report shall be submitted by the inquiry officer within eight weeks, the judge said and added that further action on the report shall proceed strictly in accordance with law. (PTI)

Further, the surveyors would also be utilised to implement the GIS mapping of temple properties, he said.

In a latest circular issued to the department officials, the Commissioner directed the regional joint commissioners to submit detailed proposals, grouping three to five temples having landed properties, to facilitate the surveying of the boundaries of temple lands and mapping of encroachments, on or before August 25, to the Head Office. The charges for the surveyors will be paid by the group of temples.

"After obtaining the proposals, a communication will be sent to the Director of Survey and Settlement to sponsor Licenced Surveyors for surveying / measuring the landed properties of temples," Kumaragurubaran informed.

Stating that temples possess vast stretches of land parcels including plots, buildings, shops, houses, quarters, etc., the Commissioner said "it is very much essential to inspect these properties in a periodical manner and encroachments, modifications, deviations, etc., if any, noticed, shall have to be taken on record for necessary legal action."

To ensure this, the temple authorities shall have a team of surveyors to inspect the properties periodically and submit reports thereon, he said. (PTI)
