Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam leader Kamal Haasan on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Coimbatore District Collector urging to resume the Grama Sabha meetings. Haasan, who is on a two-day visit to Coimbatore to thank the people for voting him in the recently concluded Assembly elections, met Collector GS Sameeran and placed several demands which included notifying the people about the Grama Sabha meetings seven days before they are held.

A total of 22,02,045 passengers have travelled via metro in Chennai ever since Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) resumed operations on June 21 this year. In a statement, CMRL said 22,02,045 passengers had availed metro services from June 21 to July 31. While 3,55,579 passengers had travelled from June 21 to June 30, a total of 18,46,466 passengers had travelled via metro from July 1 to July 31.

AIADMK presidium chairman and former minister E Madhusudhanan (81) died in Chennai Thursday after a prolonged illness. According to a bulletin issued by Apollo Hospital, he was admitted on July 18 with multi-organ dysfunction and sepsis.
“He was treated in the critical care unit by a multi-disciplinary medical team. Despite all active medical measures, his condition deteriorated gradually and passed away today (Thursday),” the bulletin added.

The Tamil Nadu unit of BJP staged a hunger protest in Thanjavur Thursday against Karnataka’s move to build a reservoir on Cauvery at Mekedatu.
Amidst a bullock cart procession, wearing green shawls, leaders and cadres of the saffron party demanded that neighbouring Karnataka should not go ahead with the balancing reservoir project which aims to meet both drinking water needs and power generation.
Senior BJP leaders, including Pon Radhakrishnan, C P Radhakrishnan, H Raja, participated in the protest. Lashing out at the Karnataka opposition parties for backing the BJP government on the issue there, Annamalai claimed the law was clearly in favour of the lower riparian state, Tamil Nadu, and that Karnataka could not build a dam without its consent.

Tamil Nadu recorded 1,908 positive cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, bringing the state tally to 25,65,462. Among these, Chennai reported 203 positive cases, bringing the city’s total to 5,38,727. The state recorded 29 deaths on Tuesday, putting the state toll at 34,159. A total of 2,047 patients were discharged following treatment, taking the total number of recoveries to 25,11,076.
As of Tuesday, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 20,217.

The Tamil Nadu government will launch a scheme to carry out archanai (religious chanting and offering) in Tamil at Kapaleeswarar temple, Mylapore in Chennai on Wednesday and it will later be expanded to 46 other big temples across the state, said Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department Minister (HR&CE) PK Sekar Babu.
“We will place the signboards in front of temples. It will have details of the priest including name and contact number which help the devotees contact the person and place requests for Tamil archanai,” the minister said.

Petrol and diesel prices continued to remain steady across the country for the 17th straight day on Tuesday, August 3, 2021. Petrol was last revised when it had touched a fresh record highs on July 17, when it rose by 30 paise per litre in the national capital while diesel prices were kept unchanged.
In Chennai, petrol is priced at Rs. 102.49 per litre while diesel costs Rs. 94.39 per litre.
A 28-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly abducting and killing an elderly couple, who were his relatives, and stealing cash and gold from their house in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruttani.
According to the police, Ranjith Kumar confessed to the murder and theft on Monday. Two of his accomplices, Vimal Raj and Robert alias Ranjithkumar, have also been arrested.
Officers said 68-year-old Sanjeev Reddy and his wife Mala lived at Bharathiyar street in Thiruttani. Reddy had been running a private chit fund for over 25 years, in which Ranjith was associated with him.

The Madras High Court on Monday directed a lower court in Villupuram trying the sexual assault of a woman IPS officer against the suspended special DGP to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis and complete it by December 20, 2021. Justice N Anand Venkatesh, who had taken cognizance of the matter on his own and was closely monitoring the case, gave the direction when the matter came up before him yesterday.
Earlier, the judge was informed by Advocate-General R Shanmugasundaram that the State government had accorded sanction to prosecute the former spl DGP and the then Chengalpattu Superintendent of Police, who had also been suspended for his alleged role in the incident.
State Public Prosecutor Hasan Mohammed Jinnah told the judge that so far 122 witnesses had been examined and 72 pieces of material evidence had been collected. The charge-sheet was filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate in Villupuram and it was also numbered, he added.
The judge, after directing the CB CID probing the case to see to it the case is completed by December 20, adjourned the matter till December 23 for filing compliance. The CJM must not be, in any way, influenced by the present writ proceedings, the judge added. (PTI)

The district administration has demolished a 10-foot-tall wall constructed by a realtor to create a gated community and thus blocking the path to a colony of Arunthathiyar community at Pannimadai on the outskirts of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu.
More than 120 scheduled caste families living in Kondasamy Nagar were reportedly forced to take a detour from the Pannimadai main road to reach their houses after a realtor built a gated community at nearby Kannabiran Nagar with a 300-metre-long wall to hide the view of the Arunthathiyar settlement. They alleged that the construction was akin to a caste wall and despite repeated requests to panchayat officials no action had been taken for the last seven years.
On Saturday, members of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) staged protests along with the residents. Later they approached the Coimbatore district revenue officer PS Leela Alex at the collectorate to intervene and take necessary action.

After more than two months in captivity, wild elephant, ‘Rivaldo’, was on Monday released from the kraal (elephant shelter) near Chikkala anti-poaching camp in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in Nilgiris district.
Rivaldo, found with injuries on its trunk and moving around in Vazhathottam village for the last nine years, was put in the shelter in the first week of May, after many futile attempts to capture it.
Necessary treatment was provided as directed by the Madras High Court, following appeals by wildlife activists till the elephant’s recovery.

The state recorded 28 deaths on Monday, putting the state toll at 34,130. 21 of them had succumbed due to comorbidities. A total of 2068 patients were discharged following treatment, taking the total number of recoveries to 25,09,029.
As of Monday, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu is 20,385. Till date, 14,97,577 males, 10,65,929 females and 38 transgenders have tested positive for the virus in the state.
According to a bulletin released by the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu, 3,77,50,115 samples from the state have been tested till date, with 1,45,321 samples having been sent yesterday. There are 280 Covid-19 testing facilities in the state, out of which 69 are government and 211 are private facilities.

After the eviction of families residing at Arumbakkam on the banks of the Cooum river created a stir in the state with many political parties including allies of the ruling government condemning the act, the Chennai Corporation has halted the eviction drive for now. It has now asked the Public Works Department (PWD) not to demolish the buildings until the families are allotted houses at KP Park in Pulianthope.
As a part of the Cooum river Eco-Restoration project undertaken by the Chennai River Restoration Trust (CRRT), as many as 243 families from Radhakrishnan Nagar in Arumbakkam were informed that they would be relocated to the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenements in Perumabakam.
After the families refused saying that relocation would affect their livelihood, they were provided re-allotments in Pulianthope.

When they were fishing in the sea southeast off the Kodiakarai coast near the International Maritime Boundary Line on the wee hours of Monday, a fast craft of personnel belonging to the Sri Lankan Navy allegedly opened fire at the boats that were fishing in the vicinity, officials added.

As part of Covid-19 management, CMRL has been sanitising trains and stations regularly. With only 50 per cent occupancy allowed, seats have been marked with ‘X’ to ensure social distancing. Masks and social distancing are mandatory and crowd control staff have been deployed across all stations in the city to ensure the same.
CMRL announced in a statement that fines amounting to Rs 200 are being levied by squads on those not wearing masks while commuting in metro. A total of 102 passengers have been fined till July 31 and Rs. 20,400 has been collected towards the same.

The Centre has planned to "usurp" the rights of state governments in admissions to post graduate medical courses and it is unacceptable, MDMK chief Vaiko said in Chennai on Sunday.
The draft Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations attempts to centralise and designate the Directorate General of Health Services, under the union Ministry of Health as the designated authority for counselling for state quota seats, he said in a statement. Vaiko, also a Rajya Sabha MP said through this the Central government has "planned to take away the authority of state governments on admissions to post graduate medical courses, which is condemnable."
Only the Tamil Nadu government should hold counselling for admissions to "100 per cent post graduate medical seats" in state-run medical colleges and the union government conducting counselling for such courses is unacceptable, he said. The Tamil Nadu government should make it categorical that the BJP-led Centre "continuously usurping the rights of state governments in the field of education" cannot be allowed, he urged.
On Saturday, Chief Minister M K Stalin told the Centre that the draft regulations, if implemented, would grossly harm Tamil Nadu. The proposed norms intended undermining the role of state governments in PG medical education since their role in the admissions under their own state quota is sought to be removed, Stalin had said. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin should ensure complete compliance of COVID-19 guidelines and take steps to protect people against a “third wave of coronavirus,” AIADMK top leader O Panneerselvam said on Sunday.
Citing the trend of a marginal rise in fresh virus cases in Tamil Nadu from July 29, Panneerselvam said improper enforcement of norms to help prevent virus spread was the reason behind the spike.
The AIADMK leader, who is also the deputy leader of opposition in the Assembly said while closure of outlets, markets in nine locations in Chennai and disallowing ‘darshan’ in some places of worship was a welcome measure, it is also important to monitor if guidelines are followed.

Stakeholders and experts should be consulted for preparation of the state budget and a separate one on agriculture to usher in a "renaissance in the lives of Tamil Nadu people," Chief Minister M K Stalin advised ministers and top officials, the government said on Sunday.
Stalin impressed on his cabinet colleagues and officials that farmers, agriculture experts and farmer associations should be consulted for the farm budget, which would be a first of its kind exercise in the state's history. The agriculture budget should incorporate schemes that would nurture farming and ensure ryots getting benefits commensurate with their hard work, Stalin advised ministers and top state officials, a government release here said.
In the run-up to the April 6 Assembly polls, the DMK had promised a seperate farm budget.
As regards the general budget, economists, industry captains, representatives of industries, traders, micro, small and medium enterprises and fishermen associations should be consulted. The budget documents should be based on the feedback from stakeholders benefitting all sections of society and usher in a "renaissance in the lives of the Tamil Nadu people," the Chief Minister advised. The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday said it was mandatory for people coming from Kerala, to the state to carry a negative RT-PCR test report or vaccination certificate of two COVID doses from August 5, in the wake of a spike in infections in the neighbouring state.
Addressing reporters, Medical and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian said, “From August 5, concerned district administrations have been directed to intensify surveillance and allow people from Kerala to enter the state if they possess an RT-PCR negativity certificate.”
Officials in the bordering districts have also been asked to allow people if they have necessary documents to show that they have received two doses of the COVID vaccines.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday appealed to people to take the views of doctors as a warning that in the case of a possible third wave of COVID-19, it may be worse and similar to the Spanish flu.
The chief minister, in a statement, also cautioned that the public should not force the government to impose a lockdown by not adhering to COVID-19 norms while in public.
Stating that his government through various measures tried to contain the spread of the virus, he said, “though we have tried to contain the virus, we have not completely stopped its spread.”

President Ram Nath Kovind will grace and address the commemoration of the 100th year of the Madras Legislative Council in Chennai Monday and unveil a portrait of the former chief minister Dr Kalaignar M Karunanidhi, an official statement issued on Sunday said.
In his maiden visit to New Delhi after taking charge as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M K Stalin had invited Kovind to attend the commemoration of the 100th year of the Madras Legislative Council and unveil the portrait of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the assembly hall.
As many as 5,000 police personnel, including commandos, would be deployed and a five-tier security cover put in place for President Ram Nath Kovind, who is set to preside over a commemorative event in Chennai to mark the centenary of the state legislature on Monday, police said.
The Assembly hall and the state secretariat, both in Fort St George, the Raj Bhavan, and the airport have been brought under the five-tier security cover.
Led by Chennai police commissioner Shankar Jiwal, 5,000 personnel, including those from commando unit, will be on duty for Kovind's visit. Precautionary measures and appropriate security arrangements are in place in all the routes that would be used by the President during his visit, a police release said.
Earlier, Jiwal chaired a meet of senior police officials to review security arrangements and advised them on measures to be followed in view of Kovind's visit. (PTI)
According to the President’s tentative itinerary, he will arrive in Chennai on August 2 (afternoon), preside over the centenary fete at the Tamil Nadu legislative Assembly in the evening and also unveil a portrait of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in the House.
On Monday night, Kovind would stay at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai and leave for the Nilgiris District on Tuesday.
On August 4, he would visit the Defence Services Staff College at Wellington near Ooty and address the Student Officers of the 77th Staff Course. He would stay at the Raj Bhavan there and leave for Delhi on August 6. (PTI)
President Ram Nath Kovind will arrive in Chennai today to commence his five-day tour of Tamil Nadu from August 2 to August 6. The President will participate in several events in Chennai and Ooty.
