A video of government hospital staff in Tamil Nadu’s Kancheepuram district using mop sticks to hang intravenous (IV) bags has gone viral on social media. This happened soon after another video of an attendant holding an IV infusion bottle at the Government Royapettah Hospital in Chennai surfaced online.
Both these incidents triggered heated debates with netizens and Opposition parties attacking the state government over the ‘poor’ health infrastructure in Tamil Nadu.
However, the government has refuted the charges and called them fabricated.
While addressing reporters on the sidelines of a government welfare event in Chennai on Friday, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said the media is reporting the news without verifying it.
“Yesterday (Thursday), a channel, I don’t want to name it, had put out a news article stating that mop sticks are being used to hang glucose bottles (intravenous bags). They are not mop sticks, but sticks that are meant for tying mosquito nets… Someone had hung the finished glucose bottle from that stick before replacing it, and in that gap, someone had taken a video.
“Two days ago, a video of a woman (attendant) holding a glucose bottle at the Royapettah hospital was uploaded. Usually, these bottles would be hung from a saline stand. However, intending to defame the government, someone had gone to the Royapettah hospital, set aside the stand, told the woman to hold the bottle, and took the video. We are searching for the culprit to initiate legal action,” Subramanian said.
“This government is not against criticism, if there are any real issues, we would like you to highlight them. If news channels need any clarification over any incident, they can contact the hospital chief concerned or me. I request you to verify the news before putting it out,” he added.
