“Darshan” at Mylapore Kapaleeshwarar temple during her visit to Chennai may not be unusual for Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, but for M Padma, a 56-year-old roadside vegetable vendor on the busy South Mada street adjacent to the temple, Sitharaman was probably the biggest VIP she had as a visitor on Saturday night.
“She came here around 7.30 pm. There was one more person with her. Then I saw many more people joining and armed men with machine guns. After reaching home every night at 11, I do watch TV news. The AIADMK on Sunday expelled former Rajya Sabha MP V Maitreyan from the primary membership of the party.
In a statement, AIADMK's interim general secretary K Palaniswami said Maitreyan violated party discipline and brought disrepute to the party.
The former MP is, hence, expelled from the party's primary membership and relieved of his post of organising secretary as well, Palaniswami said. When asked on his expulsion, Maitreyan told PTI that he is not inclined to make any comment. PTI
The NIA conducted searches at two locations in Tamil Nadu in a case related to two self-radicalised Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam supporters planning attacks on commercial establishments and important leaders in the state, an official said on Sunday.
The searches were conducted in Salem and Sivagangai districts on Saturday and led to the recovery of incriminating materials including digital devices like compact discs related to LTTE, a Sri Lanka-based banned terrorist group, a spokesperson of the National Investigation Agency said.
Books on LTTE, photos of LTTE leaders including its slain chief Prabhakaran, incriminating documents, invoices, bills for materials used for manufacturing illegal firearms, ammunition and explosive substances, seeds for making poison, and jungle survival kits were also seized during the raids, the official said. AITUC on Sunday urged the Tamil Nadu government to adopt a resolution in the Assembly seeking withdrawal of the proposed amendment of 4 labour laws by the Centre as the union claims they were against labourers.
The resolution was adopted at the 16th conference of the AITUC's district council here.

In his address following his election, Stalin asked office-bearers to take a vow to work towards securing a landslide victory for the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha (LS) polls and emerge in national politics as an unassailable force.
The party should win all the 39 Parliamentary constituencies in the state and the lone seat in neighbouring Puducherry as well, he said. This is the second time Stalin is being elected unopposed as party chief.
Exuding confidence that the DMK would win all the 40 Parliamentary segments, he tasked party functionaries to begin work right away to set up booth committees to face the polls and complete the work in two months.
Targeting both the BJP and the AIADMK, Stalin said the saffron party is attempting to do politics in Tamil Nadu against the DMK through defamatory propaganda as it has no achievements to list. "The BJP is trying to do politics by stoking religious and spiritual sentiments," he claimed. (PTI)

The toy industry in Tamil Nadu can easily generate nearly 30,000 jobs if it receives the required support from the state government, which would provide a thrust to the sector.
With minimal number of toy manufacturers in the state, Chennai and Tuticorin can be ideal destinations for the industry with port connectivity, the Tamil Nadu Toy Dealers Association President Santosh Kumar said.
Elaborating, he said when national level toy exhibition was held in New Delhi, the Telangana government allotted 1,000 acres of land for the industry. "It is a very big and positive step, lots of industry people have already gone ahead and booked their places (in Hyderabad). Something similar (kind of support) is required here in Tamil Nadu."
