Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal Wednesday warned miscreants against circulating misleading videos in relation to the Cauvery water dispute with neighbouring Karnataka.
In a statement, Jiwal said several social media channels have been sharing old purported videos of Tamils being attacked in Karnataka and claiming them to be recent incidents. The DGP said such rumour-mongering can lead to potential law and order issues.
“Strict action would be initiated against those who spread such rumours,” the DGP said, asking the public to not fall prey to false information.
On Tuesday, a few pro-Kannada groups including farmer unions organised a Bengaluru bandh in protest against Karnataka releasing 5,000 cusecs of water from the Cauvery River to Tamil Nadu every day for a 15-day period till September 27.
Educational institutions and businesses remained shut in the IT capital and buses, trucks, and private vehicles from Tamil Nadu were stopped at the state borders as a precautionary measure to avoid any untoward incident. In several pockets of Bengaluru, the police detained protesters under Section 144 of the CrPC.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee’s (CWRC) direction to Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu will be challenged before the Supreme Court.
The CM’s statement came after the CWRC directed the Karnataka government Tuesday to release 3,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu from September 28 to October 15.
“We are challenging the order of the Regulation Committee before the Supreme Court. We don’t have water to give,” PTI quoted Siddaramaiah as saying.
