The Opposition parties’ meeting in Patna on Friday did not decide on a common prime ministerial candidate but resolved to consolidate all democratic forces to defeat the BJP in the 2024 polls, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said.

Addressing reporters at Chennai airport on Friday, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief said the meeting should not be considered as something merely against one party. “All parties that gathered at the meeting were clear that in order to save India’s democracy, secularism, diversity, oppressed sections and the poor, the BJP should not be allowed to win again,” he said, emphasising that the parties should remain firm on their goal to defeat the saffron party.

“All leaders have a single point agenda and that is to defeat the BJP. We want all parties to be united to defeat the BJP and that unity was achieved in Patna. There is no doubt that the BJP will be defeated at the all-India level,” he said.

He added that history should record that a meeting took place on June 23, 2023 and in May 2024, the Opposition won the polls. The unity of secular forces paved the way for victory in all elections in Tamil Nadu, he said, and stressed the importance of such unity at the national level.

The meeting of the 15 Opposition parties at Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar’s residence in Patna was convened to work out a common roadmap for taking on the Narendra Modi-led BJP dispensation in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Stalin said he made suggestions at the meeting, including on forming alliances under the leadership of a party that has a strong presence in the state and if this was not possible, seat-sharing could be considered.

Explaining that a post-poll alliance would not be the right decision, he said parties can announce a common candidate. A common minimum programme should also be drawn up and an action committee formed to solve any issues that may arise.

Asked why he was not part of the joint press conference held by Opposition parties, Stalin said he could not attend it as he had a flight to catch to Chennai and had informed the other leaders about it.
