Woman dies,son hurt as car hits scooter

A 40-year-old woman died and her son sustained injuries after a speeding car hit their two-wheeler in front of the Hanuman Mandir on the road dividing Sectors 31 and 32 on Friday.

A 40-year-old woman died and her son sustained injuries after a speeding car hit their two-wheeler in front of the Hanuman Mandir on the road dividing Sectors 31 and 32 on Friday. Meenakshi was riding pillion with her son Kanad,whose condition is reported to be stable.

The incident occurred in the evening when Meenakshi and Kanad,residents of Bapu Dham Colony,were going to Sector 34,the police said. Originally from Tamil Nadu,the family had been staying in Chandigarh for the past many years.

“Kanad had slowed down his scooter at the traffic lightpoints near the Hanuman Mandir when a speeding car hit them from behind,” said an officer. The two were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 where doctors declared Meenakshi dead on arrival.

Sector 43 Station House Officer Inspector Sudershan Thakur said they had registered a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence. “The driver,M R Sood,has been arrested,” he added.
