Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs Durgadas Uikey, who visited flood-affected areas of Samana and Rajpura sub-divisions in Patiala district on Tuesday, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent him to assess the flood situation in Punjab.
“I have directed district officials to prepare a report that will be submitted to the Prime Minister. In this difficult time, the central government stands firmly with Punjab,” the minister, who will spend two days visiting villages in Rajpura sub-division and Samana, said.
Punjab faced one of its worst floods in decades, primarily due to the swelling of the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and seasonal rivulets due to torrential rainfall in their catchment areas in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Besides, heavy rains in Punjab exacerbated the flood situation, hitting Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, Fazilka and Tarn Taran districts the worst.
During his visit, Uikey met residents of flood-hit villages, including Jhajjo, Budhmor, Sarala in Rajpura sub-division, and Dharamheri and Sassan Gujjran in Samana, and instructed the district administration to prepare a detailed report on the extent of losses so that adequate compensation could be provided by the central government.
Interacting with farmers, Uikey took note of their key demands, such as desilting of rivers, and construction of permanent embankments and drains to prevent crop and land losses in the future.
Speaking with the media, the minister said that he had earlier visited the flood-affected areas of Himachal Pradesh.
Later, he visited Dharamheri village, where he met residents on the issue of the Hansi-Butana canal and assured them that a high-level meeting with the Central Water Commission and the states concerned would soon be convened to find a concrete solution.
