In an alleged rivalry killing, a 20-year-old man was shot dead and his friend suffered injury at Manki village under the Khanna Police jurisdiction of Samrala sub-division in Ludhiana district late Monday night.

This is the second such shootout in the district within five days. Earlier on October 31, 25-year-old kabaddi player Tejpal Singh was shot dead near the SSP office in Jagraon under the jurisdiction of Ludhiana Rural Police.

Khanna police identified the deceased as Gurwinder Singh, alias Kinda, of Manki village, a ‘kabutarbaaz’ (pigeon-fancier), who would rear and train pigeons for the sport.

Police said Gurwinder and his two friends, Dharamveer, alias Dharmu, and Lovepreet, alias Labhu, were at an isolated spot in the village around 9.15 pm Monday when four bike-borne assailants with their faces covered opened fire at them.

Khanna SP (Investigation) Pawanjeet said, “Gurwinder suffered a bullet injury near his chest, and a bullet narrowly touched Dharamveer. Lovepreet escaped unhurt. Both Gurwinder and Dharamveer were rushed to the Civil Hospital, where they were referred to a higher facility in Chandigarh. However, Gurwinder succumbed to his injuries on the way to Chandigarh, and Dharamveer is undergoing treatment at GMCH-32.”

Sub-Inspector Pavittar Singh, SHO Samrala police station, said an FIR for murder and attempt to murder was registered at the Samrala police station against Sandeep Singh of Dayalpura village, Teji of Chak Sarai village, Karan of Madpur and Simran alias Simmi of Balian village.

The SHO said, “Both groups are old rivals and nursed a grudge against each other. Members of both groups are history-sheeters and have several previous FIRs registered against them. The trigger for the latest attack is still not clear, but a few days ago, both groups had hurled abuses at each other.”
