A day after he narrowly missed being shot at, former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal appeared for guard duty at the Takht Kesgarh Sahib in Anandpur Sahib on Thursday with increased security.

The 62-year-old Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader was on ‘punishment’ guard duty outside the Golden Temple on Wednesday as part of a religious sentence awarded by the Akal Takht when a man identified as former militant Narain Singh Chaura attempted to open fire at him before he was overpowered. Chaura will be produced in court on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the security personnel on guard duty at Amritsar were in plainclothes and their deployment was scattered. On Thursday, the number of security personnel was increased and the officials were in uniform. The security personnel stood to Badal’s right as he sat on guard near the Takht Kesgarh Sahib’s entrance.

Apart from Badal’s personal security, policemen in uniform were also seen at the spot.
