The Ludhiana police Saturday solved the murder case of Baninderdeep Singh, 42, an NRI who had returned from Canada and was hacked to death near Lalton Kalan late on July 17. Police said that six men, including four contract killers were arrested in the case. Of the four, one is a minor.
Police said that Bal Singh, 28, of Lalton Kalan village, who was a long-time loyalist and caretaker of the deceased’s family and was accompanying him that night had conspired along with Jagraj Singh alias Ghaja, 29, of CRPF Colony, Dugri, who was already having a property dispute with the NRI. Both together hired four contractor killers who waylaid the NRI that night.
Ludhiana police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said that Bal Singh held a grudge against Baninderdeep as the latter used to humiliate him in front of others. Ghaja has five cases registered against him, including that for trespassing, while Bal Singh has no past criminal record.
CP Sidhu said that Bal Singh was working with the family of the deceased for more than 15 years. After constant humiliation, he conspired to murder Baninderdeep as he also thought that he would be able to easily grab his properties after his death as NRI’s family was in Canada and they were dependent on him for taking care of their properties in Ludhiana, said CP Sidhu.
The “contract killers” arrested in the case were identified as Jaspreet Singh alias Jassi, 23, of Jagdev Nagar, Sohil Ali, 22,of Mehmoodpura, Varinder Singh alias Vicky, 22, of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and a 17-year old juvenile.
Sidhu said that both the accused hired four contract killers for Rs 3 lakh of which they had already paid them Rs 2.70 lakh.
Baninderdeep, a real estate businessman, along with his family was settled in Canada and he used to come to Ludhiana for some months every year. On Monday night, after consuming liquor, the NRI was returning to his home in Lalton on a bike with Bal Singh. As planned, Ghaja and four contract killers were already present near Thakur colony. They hacked Baninderdeep to death with sharp edged weapons and fled. Later, Bal Singh raised an alarm and rushed Baninderdeep to hospital.
CP Sidhu said that Bal Singh was changing his statements frequently and later he confessed to the crime. An orphan and a native of Madhya Pradesh, Bal Singh was working with the family since he was 12-year old, said police, and used to take care of their properties in Ludhiana.
