One killed, 3 injured as lintel of showroom collapses in TDI City

Second building collapse in Mohali in less than a month

One person was killed while three others were injured after a lintel of an under-construction showroom collapsed in TDI City in Sector 118 on Monday evening. This is the second incident of a building collapse in Mohali in the last 24 days. A total of three persons have lost their lives in both the incidents.

This is the second collapse incident in less than a month in Mohali. Last week, a hotel in Chandigarh’s Sector 17, which was declared unsafe, also came down.

The victim was identified as Jaswinder Singh (41), a resident of Chuharmajra village near Landran in Mohali. Those injured were identified as Karan Kumar (30), Uday Paswan (42), and Kuldeep Paswan (28). The injured were undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Phase 6.

According to the information, the incident happened when the labourers were working on the second floor of the showroom. The roof of the first floor collapsed. Four people buried under the rubble after the lintel came down.

The injured persons were taken to the civil hospital, where one of them, Jaswinder Singh, was declared dead. The other three persons also sustained serious injuries. The district administration and police launched rescue operations after the incident.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Viraj S Tidke said that as soon as the information of lintel collapse reached the administration, they immediately launched the rescue operations under the supervision of SDM Damandeep Kaur and DSP Kharar-1, Karan Singh Sandhu.

He said during the rescue operation, two persons trapped under the lintel were evacuated and rushed to the Civil Hospital in Phase 6 immediately.

“Unfortunately, the doctors declared one of them brought dead. His situation was critical and was unconscious when rushed to hospital. The other injured is undergoing treatment there,” the ADC said.

DSP Sandhu said that the rescue operation is over and the police are investigating the matter.

The deceased has been identified as Jasvinder Singh (41), a resident of Chuharmajra. The victim was a shuttering contractor and was father to two daughters.

Apart from this, two more persons who got injuries while they jumped off from the lintel initially, have got minor injuries while the second person evacuated from the debris, has been undergoing treatment.

SP (Rural) Manpreet Singh told The Indian Express that they were identifying the culprits and will register a case.

“Our prime focus is the injured persons, we will take legal action by registering the FIR against the culprits and also find out whether the construction was legal or illegal,” SP Manpreet Singh added. The building is said to be owned by a Delhi resident.

This is the second incident in a span of less than one month. On December 21, a multi-storey building collapsed in Sohana village in Mohali, killing two persons who were buried under the debris. The owners of the building were arrested by the police after the registration of the case.
