After much celebration and exuberance,it is now time for CPM to get down to business and deliver on their promises. Mayor Sanjay Chauhan and Deputy Mayor Tikender Singh Panwar will be taking over their duties on June 5.

Purnima Chauhan,Director of Urban local bodies said: “The term of incumbent Mayor Madhu Sood and councilors will end on June 4. The newly elected team will take charge of the Shimla Municipal Corporation on June 5.”

Chauhan and Panwar – accompanied by CPM state secretary Rakesh Singha – met Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal and discussed some of the issues facing the MC including its fiscal situation.

“It was a symbolic courtesy call and we did not raise any serious issues. Next week, when we assume charge,I will lead the House – including elected councillors of the BJP (12) and Congress (10) – to the chief minister and will ask for an immediate bail-out package for the corporation beside sanctioning funds for the town’s development,” Chauhan said. He maintained that responsibility of Shimla’s development also rests with the state government.

Deputy mayor,Tikender Singh Panwar said: “We are not fully agreeable with the concept of putting a commissioner of the government’s choice to run the affairs of the corporation.”
