Sec 39 waterworks in pitiable condition, find councillors

Unhygienic conditions and a lack of security was what the councillors found when they visited the water works in Sector 39.

Unhygienic conditions and a lack of security was what the councillors found when they visited the water works in Sector 39. The water works receives untreated water from Kajauli, which is treated here and then distributed to different parts of the city.

The councillors who visited found that the storage tanks with raw water were not covered. The area where the tanks were present had overgrown grass. In some areas the grass was freshly cut. A councillor stated that the condition was such that if the grass was not cut,the storage tanks would not even be accessible.

Another problem witnessed was the lack of security at the water works. While CCTV cameras have been installed at some points, the wall at the back was not under surveillance making it an easy target for someone to enter. Councillors expressed concern that anyone could enter the complex unchecked. There are four security guards,of which two are at the gate. Officials claimed that the remaining two keep taking rounds of the water works to prevent anyone from entering.

There are 7 storage tanks at the water works with a capacity of 6 million gallons per day each. It was felt that in case of a breakdown at Kajauli, the water available would not be sufficient for even a day’s supply in the city.

The councillors had been demanding for the past few weeks that they should be taken for a visit to the water works to see its functioning. A few months back when some councillors had conducted a surprise inspection at the Sewerage Treatment Plant at Diggian,it was found to be in pitiable condition.
