It was supposed to be the first big rally in the poll-bound Punjab, but a heavily overcast sky and dense fog, which had been blinding the state for the past few days, played the spoilsport for the Congressmen at Moga.
The partyworkers and others who had assembled here to see and hear AICC president Sonia Gandhi had to return disappointed as the UPA chairperson had to cancel the visit owing to the inclement weather.
Even we flew at a very low range. We were flying almost parallel to the high tension wires. We could not have taken this kind of a risk with our party president, state party chief Capt Amarinder Singh said, explaining why Sonia cancelled the trip where she was to seek support for 11 Congress candidates.
In fact, several locals who had assembled to hear her speak, were seen taking away hoardings that had Sonia Gandhis photographs.
Earlier,Amarinder tried to lift the spirits with Badal-bashing,however,the locals were disappointed.
Balwinder Singh, who had traveled from Tota Singh Wala,a village near Moga to see Sonia Gandhi, said,I have only seen her on the television and today was my chance to hear and see her in person. I am disappointed that I could not meet her.
Buta Singh,a resident of Saidoke village, said,We came braving the biting cold and the fog. While there was no one to clear the roads for us,I am sure for a VVIP like Sonia Gandhi, travelling by road wouldnt have been a problem. She should have come. When we poor can reach here,so could have she.
Meanwhile, party in-charge for Punjab Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak read out a message by Sonia where she assured the party workers that the entire senior leadership was with them and asked them to stand firm and united.
She said, the worst was over and it was matter of few days more when the people of Punjab will have a friendly government led by the Congress unlike the current one which has victimised people all over.
